If thats a dealer talking, he's lying like a dog. No way in hell can a delaer do that for that price. If its you, doing it your self, thats fine, but personally, I would have a professional flush & fill if my system has been mixed.
nope i flushed it myself at my work (and yes with a machine.....you trying to say im unprofessional? )

my coolant is low can i just fill it with prestone and be fine?

I filled my coolant with the mix with any color coolant then saw this thread a couple of days later. Ive been watching my levels and temp carefully and havent noticed a diffrence. Gonna keep watchin it tho just in case

Freakin smarty pants:tongue:  You didnt like rub body parts on the machine right? Now, THAT would be unprofessional:eeeek:

Brett, I used the Prestone "any color" stuff to top mine off from say 20K til I completely drained the system at 45K, at which time I refilled it with the same Prestone stuff, which is fine now at 68K.

is water wetter or royal purple ice worth it

what does it do, and what systems does it work with
man im not really too sure if it worked well with my car? i tossed some in over last summer after my 180 stat and couldnt really tell a difference? but it may just be all in the mixture. i plan to try something else again very soon.

and no i dont get naughty with the coolamt machine that often...especially since the pump is broke now :crying:

Well i've been working in the lube business for about 3 or so years. I can tell you right now that dexcool is dogshit. I see so many GM's coming in for an oil change and there coolant is all fucked up. That coolant is supposed to last 150,000 miles my ass! About 3 weeks after i got my car i flushed out the coolant in my srt-4 for the good ol green stuff as you guys call it. It may not last as long but i trust it 10x more than the dexcool. And about the water wetter or royal purple ice, they do work, it does (like someone said) depend on the mixture. The mix for these types of additives is like a 80/20 of water and coolant, the water wetter acts as the lubricant and keeps the mix from either freezing or rusting. I did notice with it, my temps took longer idleing periods to get hot and less time to cool back down. 80% water 20% green coolant and a bottle of water wetter!

yea, honestly the more water the better, with warmer climates... as long as you keep about 20% coolant. i am probably running about 75/25 with a bottle of water wetter in it. runs nice and cool. also when you change fluid i can't stress enough how much a flush will improve your cooling performance. you should have seen the shit that was coming out of my radiator.

ahhhhh shitty fucking hell. After turbo install I put in the dexcool. Fuck me.......so red mopar huh? Damn I'm guessing I need a flush as well eh?
Its not red anymore , We changed it to orange .

the only problems with dex-cool i have seen are when stupid ass people mix the regular green with it, it causes it to sludge and start looking real shity. i would stick with the mopar change it every thirty thousand or sooner and have no problems.

but...Mopar coolant isn't Dex-Cool...

Here's the real question...is Mopar coolant (HOAT) better than the regular green stuff? I think so.

There is nothing wrong with GM dexcool. GM in the mid 90's did put in clay tablets into the cooling system to prevent leaks. That is the primary problem with GM cooling systems. I have a 94 impala SS and the cooling systems was all plugged up, but what did I expect the thing had 200k and had never been flushed! Honestly the stuff is pretty good, it does not deserve the reputation it has got from idiots not maintaining their cooling systems properly. Add that to GM putting in clay tablets (mistake) folks mixing incompatible coolants, tap water(all sorts of foreign crud in tap water) and time and you got a nasty science experiment going on in your cooling system.

use radiator flush, like the prestone stuff
throughly flush and reverse flush the system
drain engine block, radiator and heater core
refill with desired mixture of DISTILLED WATER and concentrate coolant(not the premix) (I use the prestone extended life).
Additives like RMI-25 are a good thing as it assists in keeping it clean.
I am not sold on the likes of water wetter, but some really like it.

EDIT: Not meaning to imply that GM dexcool is the best out there, just that you did not mess up your car by using it. As stated I have switched over (in the impala not the SRT) to prestone extended life (the yellow stuff). In the SRT I would still use the factory recommended fill. Just be sure to buy the concentrate and mix it with distilled water

I do partially agree with this. While I don't like using the Dex-Cool stuff, it CAN work in the systems it's designed for just fine.

Ok, now I am confused from this thread. Some say Green is good, others say it is bad. Some say others are good, others are bad. Is the uniform consensus to just go to the dealership and buy the G-05 stuff? I just put a good chunk of change into my car and I hate to think my coolant choices are going to affect the cars longevity. Everyone I talked to said the new stuff, no matter who makes it is junk. That the orang/red eats seals and sludges up, and no matter what I should stick with green? Iwant my engine/turbo to have the best stuff I can get to keep it clean and cool without a bad side affect, so which should I buy hands down? LOL!:readclose

Soo a bottle of that wet wetter stuff, the green shit from the dealership and let someone flush real goood.

Oh boy....

Coloring doesn't have much to do with what the coolant actually is. The OEM I work for manufactures their vehicles with purple coolant. Why? Just because we can see it better though our coolant tanks. We could get it in any color we desired.

All you need to do is read the back of the container. If it said Ethylene Glycol, it should NOT go in our SRT's. If it says Propylene Glycol, then you are good to go.

We run our machines to the max of our cooling package, and a mixture of 51% to 49% is the optimized mixture for all seasons. (51% Coolant) If you mix in too much coolant (say 75%) it will not be as effective at cooling your engine, while at the same time provide minimal additional protection from boiling. Like many things, more isn't better with respect to coolant. Just mix it properly and everything will be good.

Or if you're in a hot environment run more water than coolant which is better for cooling. Just change it more often since it's providing marginally less protection from corrosion (and run some of the lubrication pellets for the water pump).

Since the thread was bumped and it was originally asking about Havoline's long-life DEXCOOL that GM uses, I just bought a car that's a little over the time limit for the change interval (5 years). After I bought the car I was looking around and pulled out the hose from the over flow bottle and there was this massive sludge all over the place. So that means it's way overdue and needs an extensive flushing and cleaning. At least the engine is pretty bullet proof and it's still running cool, but I bet the radiator and heater core are pretty gummed up. This is very common for DEXCOOL and a couple of the other long-life formulations. For anyone that is running this coolant in another car you need to change it way before the recommended interval. It's not a lifetime coolant.

50 percent green 50 percent water
 people forget about boilover protection that the coolant gives. Water will boil over if you add to much 75% is to much. Nascar only uses straight water so the track will not get all slippery if it leaks. Do what your dealer would do says or otherwise expect issues when you go to the dealer for anything. if you want better cooling features go with a lower thermostat.
