Just blows me away what the sport compact performance parts sell for sometimes. I appreciate the fact that our cars are very cheap on the dollar-per-horsepower guage compared to most SCC's..but DAMN $1400+ for machine work and larger valves?? The AFR aluminum race heads for my Chevy 350 were $1425. For TWO complete heads (no core charge/req either..) with gorgeous CnC work through intake port-combustion chamber-exhaust port, complete with valves+springs etc..complete heads ready to bolt on

I am NOT knocking your head or the work done. The pictures show some beautiful port work. Truly a nice addition to your car. It's just that I about shit myself sometimes when i read some of these prices compared to what I'M used to is all.

I love classic detroit power. I love modern forced induction power. I LUST after combining both with twin turboed V8's...which WILL be my next project.

Anyways..lol..I'll shaddap now

A lot of the pups have no reference point and buy up this stuff and keep the price up. Also not to mention that you have to wait 4 months or so from most shops. I will add that a CNC cuts the labor down significantly from a hand ported job.

The guys that sell heads for the small block Chevy motors can design a set of heads and plan to sell literally thousands of them. That volume allows them to make a profit spread over a lot of sales. Small companies that design the head for a motor like the one in the SRT-4 might only sell a few dozen of them. They have to sustain themselves on a paltry handful of sales.

Not saying I like it, just trying to frame it in an example. I wish SRT-4 heads were cheaper, but when you consider that I picked up over 40 real HP at the wheels (non HOM), $1400 is pretty inexpensive. Some of the Mustang guys spend $1000 on headers and exhaust just to gain 20-25hp if that. I guess it's all relative.

and the hand-ported ones definately need that kind of price tag.
I've seen how much work Nick of NRGY puts into hand-porting a head.

A company that is going to sell 10,000 heads for like a SBC can easily absorb the cost of having a machine (CNC) crank all those puppies out.

A company isn't going to invest the time and money on a CNC setup for the SRT when they'll be lucky to sell 50 heads out of it.

What AFR head have you bought that cost that much cnc'd? AFR's Comp port is at a minimum of 1800 bux on any of they're heads and it's less than mediocre if even that.. If you have ever looked to see what the going rate for porting goes for nowaday's whether it be hand porting or CNC ..It's not cheap.. on avg expect to pay 800-1500 easily and the cheaper side being shoddy work and the decent work going upto 1500.. And it does go further beyond 1500 depending on the head and how far you wanna go.. Or how deep your pocket is..
FWIW i'm spending close to 2500 in portwork on my SBC heads that don't include any part's.... which may seem like a lot.. But in order to acheive close to 2.1hp per C.I N/A it's a cheap price to pay...

IMO that's a great price to pay for a well thought out head w/ good i/e ratio and some kick ass exhaust valve's.. Can't beat that price w/ a stick... :)

Another ? though.. What does a avg Stage III car put down?
