Filter directly off Turbo?

Hey guys. I've read a lot yesterday about cold air, short ram and even running a filter directly on turbo.

My questions is this : I have an 4" Turbo inlet, but only running a 2.5" Cold Air intake. Was about to switch to a 4" Short ram , but then saw a thread about direct filter.

What would be the benefit of this???? Probably cheaper, no need to move the battery in the bumper/trunk, and cleaner engine bay.... But where will I move the vent coming out of the valve cover, it needs vacuum right?

And what kind of filter should I get to fit in there without hitting the brake booster?

Air intake controversy and strong opinions

You'll get the following 5 arugments (w/minor variations) with air intake questions:

1) the stock box is somehow good for up to 500 HP
2) you'll suck in HOT engine bay air with your turbo direct attach filter
3) people love their aftermarket air intakes'
4) watch out for deep water & rain puddle ingestion
5) the intercooler selection/function will cool all the air anyway

I think that covers all of the themes

BUT - if you google related images, and design your own exact fit K&N filter (get on their website) -- you could come up with a nice filter - and I support the idea; see#3 above :thumbsup:

I'm not sure what your post has to do with a filter directly attached to the turbo.

SRTR4the win mentioned you could put a breather element on the valve cover.
I considered a direct attach turbo filter too. I like the idea, BUT you must make sure with your fat turbo you have a durable, strong, filter item to withstand the suction. Dont resort to a screen attachment.
Did you look at K&N website to specify your own dimensions in an air filter?

no perfect situation with air intakes or filters



There is no perfect situation with air intakes. There will always be a change in air intake temps, outside temps, engine bay temps, intercooler soak, etc. There will always be compromises with filters, OEM systems, interior noise, filter media, filtration, restriction, atmosphere pressure - you name it.
If any individual wants to apply a personal decision to their air intake then do it and don't fret over what everyone does. If you don't like it change it back to OEM or try something different.
I fiddled with my OEM intake, tried ebay (junk) then got an AEM. I love it.

I understand the part that says we can use a breather on the valve cover, but so many people say the opposite... I don't know who's right and who's not..DCR made a thread about it saying the valve cover NEEDED a vacuum source...Hmm. I've plugged everything back like stock for now, I'll see if things change or not.

horsepower isn't always the issue



A dyno test cannot assess all the variables one encounters with air intakes and drivetrains under real world driving conditions anyway.
Not every decision about an air intake is goverened by potential horsepower gains.
For me, driveabiltiy esp at 8000+ feet and throttle response and turbo spooling and MPG increased to my liking - so I don't care what anyone else barks about. I took my hood scoop out too.

Wouldn't this work directly?

As for performance or heat getting in the turbo, that's not the main point of my question...I'm asking cause a direct filter would save me money, wouldn't have to move the battery to the trunk/bumper like a 4" Short ram, and would clean the engine bay..I'm just scared about the vent coming out of the driver side of the valve cover..Don't wanna hurt anything..If it's dangerous, I'll just keep with my 2.5" cold air I guess.

up spec that filter



Depending on the dimensions of that filter, you could, if you wanted, up spec it to add the additional conical intake area where the rubber cap is

The breather element coming out of the valve cover would only be affected if you were CONSTANTLY at red line, creating heavy exhaust blow by and smoking your oil. It's a device to handle hot/cold engine blow by and pressures - and blow by oil would be reburned in your turbo for smog reasons.

I have a breather element on my srt-4 and the ago intake. There is a negative. When you get rid of the hose coming from the intake to the valve cover, you have to put a vacuum cap over the port on the intake. DO NOT USE NAPA VACUUM CAPS! Other than that, it's goin great! I couldn't be happier with my setup.

My recommendation is to use a large filter if you want to do this. Reason being is because i've seen countless filters actually crumple up from the suction. Larger filters will reduce this affect... and keeping them meticulously clean.

Last thing you'll want is my situation where you suck in parts of the air filter like i did with a 50 trim turbo on my dsm. Bye turbo, bye motor. Good knowing you.
