I broke my input shaft. I need to fix it ASAP, Wife can't get on base with her car.

I have been looking at this manual, but I't doesn't seem to be very helpful for now.

http://www.carbide-red.com/service_manual/18627-pl-trans_sgmldiag.pdf

I am wondering if this is something I can replace myself, or does a professional need to do it. I have never taken apart a transmission, but I am pretty mechanically inclined.

I have the origonal Throw Out Bearing, so I am going to order one from Modern, unless someone has any better advice. I also have the origonal Fork, so I was going to order aone from Modern as well, because my clutch engages right off the floor sometimes. I have a welder, could I just repair the fork in the area where it is worn? Or bad idea?

After my ACT clutch install about a year ago. My trans makes a "tapping" noise when the pedal is out. Push pedal in, no more noise. how can I avoid that rattle when I put everything back together?

I see my fly wheel looks a little scuffed, I think I should get it resurfaced. Good idea or bad? Its only about a year old.

I understand the stock input shaft has a flaw, being the area where the diameter gets smaller , the typical breaking point. How do you avoid that? It that the "weld mod.?"

So this is what I need to do? I already have trans out of the car tho.

I'll start taking her apart tomorrow after work. Anyone wanna come over and watch, or help, you would be very welcome. This will be my first trans dissassembly.

unless your a transmission guy i wouldnt touch it. the whole tranny has to come out and has to be fully taken apart. i broke mine last year and i wanted to fix it by my self to save on money but it was not happening. i brought it to a guy my dad knew and he hooked it up. i wached it get done its a hassel. ever part of the tranny has to be striped down. anyway since i had my tranny all apart i spent little extra money and had all the gears cryo treated and had a PWERKS billet input shaft done.. now no woeries.. good luck man hope this helped.

Thanks bro. I think I'll take it out and give it to someone who knows their way around it. Damn, I wish, I wish it was more simple.

I am an Air Traffic Controller, I am a Tax Prep'r, I have been in the Military over 5 years and I am not used to not knowing how to do something. I was an Aviation Ordnanceman and knew all the equipment. I got my AW/SW in 1 deplotment (Navy will know what I mean) I can dissassemble and clean and reassemble my Mossberg, and have done TONS of work to my 64 Impala. I don't like it when I can't fix something myself. Just don't like it.

Any Trans experts near El Centro? SD? Yuma?

FML. :stab: No I cant get the bearing off. I am guessing it's the "bearing sleeve." The tip is mushroomed.

I don't have a press, but there is a machiene shop down the street.

I can borrow snap pliers and the torx if I don't already have the sized I need. I will see if the pharmacy on base has any patients I can borrow. Maybe one of them is a trans mech. Then I'll go watch Pushing Tin.

First I'mma look up jtmoney's trans thread.

I used to believe in cryo treating transmission parts. Needless to say I've learned the hard way why it's a bad idea for our transmissions. Some gear companies will even tell you that cryo treating is a process better done while the gears are being made. I refuse to cryo treat transmissions components anymore.

Thanks. I didn't know it was spelled that way, I thinks thats why it wasn't coming up. Not even on google.

Update: Tonight I will remove the gearset and isolate the input shaft. Tommorrow after work we will use the press at the shop on base to remove the gears, allowing me to take pictures of the shaft to properly identify it. Saying that makes me feel like Brett Farve.

Roger that. Almost got the gearset out. I am taking a dinner break. I decided to hit the casing with a dremel wire wheel where it meets the body of the tranny. I started tapping on them to seperate them and realized there was a ton of dirt and I didn't wanna drop it into the case. I will put the tranny in a big trash bag until i get this shaft done so no dust or moisture gets in.

UPDATE: Input shaft is in trunk of 64 Impala (DD 4 now) and I'll try my hand at dissassembling it tomorrow after work. Bell housing also in trunk, maybe I can get the TOB sleeve out tommorrow.

So far easy as pie. Keeping fingers crossed.

Where is El Centro? Wish I would have known that you needed this as I have a complete input shaft with gearset available. I am actually making a sale thread right now.:stab:

It's near Calexico, it's 2 hours east on I-8. I am in the proscess of identifying wich shaft I have right now.

Do you know what caused the shaft to break? Did you used to WOT shift?
I got the S1 kit a few years ago and WOT shifted all the time. Never had problems. Now I am S2 w/ toys and DSP tuned for Meth. I WOT shifted from 3rd to 4th and broke the input shaft. :crying:

I rarely WOT shift, but I wanted to datalog my knock on my self-tune for meth. 1.5KR.

Pics of my progress.

Here are some pics. I pressed out the gears, and kept them in order for reference. I still need to press out the mushroomed TOB sleeve. Here's my progress. Guys, if you have a press and a dremel, this is not hard at all. Jtmoney's threas is frikken AWESOME! I am saving alot of money doing the work on my own. I am learning trans trouble-shooting, from all the trans threads I have been reading :readclose , and I becoming more confident in my own trans work. :ninja:

^^ I thought about it. I REALLY want to have it dyno ready for the 23rd. I don't know it it's gonna happen. Sad.

I think since I have everything out I might port the 02 housing and cut the top of the hot side pipe and make it the same diameter from the turbo, down past the small neck a few inches from the turbo. I have a bunch of dremel pieces I can use. i may never use them for anything else. Why not? I have heard that it doesn't increase any Hp, but I figure every little thing helps. I will just give the trans a good bath before re install. Wich brings me to my next question: I might as well replace the axle seals since it is already out, right?

So list of parts I need to buy:
-TOB
-Shift Fork
-TOB sleeve
-new needle bearings Why exactly?
-pwerks 3/4 syncro clip Also what advantage to this?
-3rd gear extender. What's this for?
-Axle seals
-Fluid (ATF+4)

anything else you can think of?

How do the teeth on 3rd gear and 4th gear look? What about on the synchro sleeve? Is all the friction material still on the blocker rings?

-Hit up AaronNeon and get the Rage 3/4 billet fork
-Get the P-Werks 3/4 synchro ring (stock one likes to break and when it does it ruins things)
-Get a new 3rd gear thrust washer
-That 03 shaft doesn't use needle bearings, one reason the 03 shafts are different. They have fluid passages instead.
-I guess if you have some miles on it replace the axle seals
-Amsoil ATF+4. Doesn't need additional friction modifier
-TOB
-input shaft bearing (comes with sleeve)
-billet shift selector (stock one likes to break)

If you have a good shift fork, 3rd gear, and 3/4 synchro you don't need the extender. I consider it a band-aid.

Well. My clutch sometimes engages right off the floor. Wich, by Modernperformance's website, suggests a worn shift fork. I have almost 180K on my car, so new seals sound like a good idea. I also need a new 5th gear Nut (The big one you have to cut to remove) Sometimes I feel a little "scratch" when upshifting into 3rd gear.

Okay, I can't afford all the goodies, though I understand the importance of preventative maintnance. The billet items will have to wait. It's just gonna put me in the poor house if I get it all at once. Though I wish I could.

I am running into a problem wuth the 3rd gear thrust washer. The dodge dealer here can't find it in his computer. I have looked at jymoneys thread, and he posted the diagrams, but the part numbers are blurry. I even printed them out to see if they are legeable but they are not. What's the part number? Okay, might have found it: 5069158AA can anyone verify this? My didge dealer here is new, and they said their computer doesn't tell you the specifics between 2003 and the other years.

Also are these verifyable?:
Input shaft bearing w/ sleeve 5013411AA
Input shaft rollerbearing snapring J8134488
5th gear retaining nut 5069168AA

Update:
Pwerks TOB ordered.
Pwerks 3/4 synchro ring ordered
Mopar Clutch Pivot Fork ordered from Modernperformance

3rd gear Thrust Washer dealer needs part number verification
Axle seals $8.99 a piece Autozone has 2 on hold for me It has been said in threads I have read that aftermarket seals have a problem leaking, and the only fix is to get the real-deal from the dealer. So I guess Ill go with dealer ones.
Input Shaft Bearing w/ Sleeve Dealer needs part number verification

The billet forks and shift selector are just too expensive for me right now.
