I have one sitting in the garage from a 2004 SRT4. I took it out of the car when it had 1000 or so miles on it (IIRC, its been a long time). I also have one out of a 2003 PT cruiser.
Off-topic but I still have the stock ECU from my '05 with 56,234 miles on it (I had a P4510910 Stage 1 installed on 2-18-11 but the car has since been upgraded to a P4510912 Stage 2 with Toys).
I kept my stock 03 PCM (aka ECU), injectors, MAP and TIP for the bienial SMOG check every 2 years.
Some may consider it a pain in the arse to have to swap those components every 2 years.
But the stock components (PCM mainly) do expose problems which are ignored by the "Stage" ECU's.
For example, my car was getting P0440's (fixed with new NVLD).
And is still getting P0441's (still investigating).
Neither of those problems were reported by my Stage 3 PCM.
I suspect this may possibly be because the EVAP diags are disabled in the Stage 3 code.
Hence why Stage PCM's are certified for "Off Road Use Only".
But I'm guessing at that.
I don't think "code scrubbers" with a Stage PCM would catch these EVAP codes.
Indiana hasn't had emissions testing for many years now but I agree with you about keeping the PCM just in case. I guess this means that I won't be selling my stock one any time soon then.
