okay tomorrow i am entering in a spl comp... ive only got 400 watts to work with, im running two twelves that handle 500 watts RMS which would be best, one 12" at 400 RMS or two 12" subs at 200 RMS???

uh...i'm just spitballing here, but I would go with the one 12"
i've seen some impressive single sub set-ups. a friend of mine runs one 10" that you would swear was 2 12"s! i guess it matters the quality of the amp, subs, wires, etc...

Theoretically it shouldn't make a difference.

what kind of incloser are you using? if you are running a ported box, then use both of them. if you use a small seeled box, use one. hopes this helps.

2 12's. even with half the power it's still pushing twice the air as one 12.

it really depends on the subs and how efficient they are. the pair that handle 500 watts rms would be the worst for SPL, since they take more power to move. from the info given, i'd use the pair that handle 200 rms and port them. even if they have low excursion, that's ok, cause with a ported box they won't be moving much around the tuned frequency.
