turbo shutter when boosting

5348 Views 8 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  cavskillz
Ive owned this car for 5 months now and just within the last couple of days ive noticed that when I boost the car up you can hear the turbo whistle as it gains boost and then when it reaches 13-14psi i can hear a shutter sound instead of a constant whistle like a normal turbo. For some reason i dont notice this in 1st and 2nd gear possibly because its only a few seconds and your into the next gear but 3rd 4th and 5th you can really hear this shutter. I have a greddy bov and when u can hear the shutter and i back off the throttle my bov changes note also and does a shutter almost like an hks ssqv. I dont run this car hard everyday just once in a great while so this may have been going on for several weeks and i just noticed it when I dropped it into 3rd to pass a car on the highway.

anyone have any ideas or experienced anything like this??

sounds like maybe spark blowout. What plugs do you have and what are they gapped at?

I am using NGK 4306 plugs gapped at .032 with msd wires and ignition coil
hmm...the only other thing i can think of is compressor surge
This weekend im gona pull the plugs and take off the msd wires and coil pack and swap with the stock and recheck the gap on the plugs and clean em up a bit and then see if it makes a difference
ah crap...didn't even think of that. get rid of that junker msd coil...stock out performs it and lasts longer by far. several posts about it on here to back that up
Don't mean to hijack your thread but i have the same problem as you, turbo shutter in boost. I noticed it shuttering in (3rd gear and up) after my intake install but thought it was normal, expected for an upgrade in intakes. I never noticed the boost gauge flutter. But after i installed my stage 1 i noticed it now shutters at 16psi with the needle fluttering, (second gear only sees 15psi). I did'nt personaly think it was spark blowout, but just to be sure i lowered my gap from .050 to .040 (ngk IX). That did'nt change anything, so im going to my shop tomorrow to do a boost leak test. I'm confident all my hoses are tight but i've hear our stock bov are weak, im thinking it may be that. I'll post back up after i try it and give you guys a update.

oh ya, by the way with my plugs gaped at .040 it now dosent backfire after shifting at wot :( as soon as the car cools down it's back to .050.

bump for some input for us.
Your giving it to much boost at to low throttle position. Half throttle + 13lbs+ = compressor surge.

BINGO! swaped out the msd coil pack with the stocker and left the msd wires on. No surge anymore and the car is back and running strong
