so, here's the story, I caught 2 guys last night trying to steal my brand new favorite car in the world.... :( I live in an apartment building in the downtown area of a medium size town. It's not a bad area at all, but, I rent my parking space and thus, always have to park in the same spot. I'm worried now that the "word is out." I know its the only one in the area, and I'm sure people are starting to talk. So, any advice on a good alarm system or anything else I could do to keep it safe?

Yeah, I'd definitely shoot the bastards. I'm sure the cops will understand if you give them a test drive.  I'm definitely adding a good alarm to my car.

What does lojack cost these days? It used to be really expensive, but it must be more reasonable now...

As for theft, are they trying to tow it, crack the ignition, or do they have a key?

So much for sleeping now, you know they'll be back...

Good luck,
Dale

btw, it's fun to pretend that you might shoot the bad guys, but the reality of the situation is that you'd likely have no reason to do so. If you managed to hit one of them, and managed to avoid criminal charges, you'd still be looking at a civil suit that would ensure your criminals would live well for a long time. Actually kill them and you'd pretty much kiss your life as you knew it goodbye.

Theft is what insurance is for, best case would be that it's not recovered. Getting yourself beat down or shot becomes one of the least of your worries when you decide to pull a gun without having shots fired at you first. This is coming from someone who works in a town where every household is required by law to own a gun, and the proper ammo for it... They gotta have 'em, God help them if they use them though....

One word, GARAGE! Since that's not possible, you are susceptible to the coveting thieves. Try a fuel cut off switch, Lojack, The Club, an alarm that gives a vocal warning when someone gets close, and a baby monitor if your car is close enough to your window. Good luck brother!

I have a DEI alarm on my Trep and it works very well. DEI makes the Viper alarms. Just don't get the gay ass talking module, if they even sell that anymore. Kids always set those modules off just to hear the car talk, plus it's lame.

I had a buddy who had a "Protected by H&K" sticker in his window. Pretty effective deterant measure. :p

There is also a silencer. I wish I knew more about it, but it came already installed on my Firehawk. Basically it's this little chip that you have to have present to start the car. You can mount the base whereever you want. Mine's under the steering column. I would strongly suggest looking into one of these if you fear your car is a target. Then just get into the habit of taking the chip out every night.

LoJack is also a good thing to have, especially if you live in an apartment complex. But there is a monthly charge on top of installation. I don't think they are unreasonably expensive now-a-days.

Personally I would go with the DEI alarm and silencer chip combo. But try looking into all these avenues and find out what costs are involved. But I wouldn't wait too long. A lot of idiots would love to take a joy ride in your new baby.

Keep her safe.

Mike

p.s. If you can swing the money the remote start DEI alarm is badass! I can't tell you how impressed girls get when I start the car before ever opening the door. Girls are impressed by the goofiest shit ;)

one thing you can do is make your presence around the car known, if they come back and see you watching its likely they'll back off for a while. in the meantime get an alarm!

as far as starting the car goes i think the SRT's have the sentry key which will stop most people from stealing it unless they have some sophisticated equipement, on the other hand it is a 5spd so they could just roll it away if they got inside... :\

just curious.. what city do you live in? pm me... if you dont i understand perfectly, i go to school in akron (u of a) and live about 10 mins away from akron.

good luck.

yea but you cant remote start a 5-speed, that only works on autos......becasue you have to push in the clutch to start the car. they sentry key should be able to stop somebody from hotwiring your car but they could always roll it away......but then again if you lock your doors with the keyless remote and then try to open the door from the inside with out unlocking it with the remote the horn goes off. i was looking at the mopar accesories catelog and they have an upgraded alarm that uses infrared sensors to protect the inside of your car.......not sure how much it is. but it works with your exsiting keyless entry so..........

I love the DEI products. I've had several and even the 'entry-level' models are good quality. Nothing wrong with getting the top of the line model, but don't get a bunch of shit you'll never use. They have some really cool options, but they can get expensive. Try to stick with things you actually need. And if you didn't know, DEI products are forever. If you get a new car, you can take the alarm off your old car and put it on the new one, free. The one I have now I've had for three or four years and it still works like new. Only thing is the remotes do wear after a while. You can easily get new ones from the company, but if you're smart you can take them apart and work on them yourself. It's pretty easy. Also, in my experience, the do-it-yourself alarms are not worth it. You can save some money, but not much over an entry-level installed alarm. And, generally, the ones you can do yourself don't have half the features (a lot of which are imortant).

Well...thanks everyone for the advice. I just went to get a price on a "VIPER" (DEI) system. It seems pretty good...fully installed....all the good stuff...$300. Didn't really plan on spending my money on that....but, what can you do.....Its worth it. Thanks again!

1. The sentry key prevents anyone from hotwiring the car.

2. Someone could roll the car, but the steering wheel would be locked. (I suppose they might be able to bust the wheel lock. Not sure.)

3. You can't remote start the car because of the sentry key.

4. The club is useless. It wouldn't stop anybody.

5. Alarms are pretty much useless. Most people ignore them.

6. I think the Lojack recovery system combined with the Lojack early warning system is the best bet. You can be called or paged when the car is moved, and if they get away with it the police will find it. A little pricey, but it sounds worth it.

Absolutely 100% bullshit!
All cars can be remote started, even if they have sentry key, even if they are 5 speed. I have this setup (rem start ) on one of our cars right now!

Nothing can prevent theft, but it will sure as hell slow down a thief. Which thier really wants to cut a club? or try to disable an alarm?

Last time I checked, for the models in that price range you can get some really cool features. Like the "panic button" (for lack of the proper term). It's basically a feature for if your car ever got jacked (stolen with you in it, or formerly in it). When you're in the car if the door opens without you disabling this feature the car will shut off a few seconds after the door closes. And it's a hidden button with a specific combination (you set) so there is no way (or almost no way) for a crook to beat the system. Same one(s) should have shutoff if the door is opened with the alarm on, and not being turned off. It'll get no fuel/no electro.

The club & the alarm are inexpensive deterrents. If it's kids we're talking about, they will think twice. A pro car thief cannot be stopped on the other hand.

Cali, I'm not sure what I did to provoke that response from you, but I'm not feeling too keenly towards you. If you read the SRT-4 User's Manual it states that you cannot use a remote starter.

I know Dale, it just really pisses me off to think about someone taking what I worked for. I know the legalities of firearms pretty well, and I know I was just spouting my emotions off the top of my head, but dammit!!! I waited, planned & schemed sooooo long to get this car that the very thought of someone taking it away like that makes me start spitting nails! Your point is taken and valid though...
