Sub/Amp advice

For the last couple years I have been running an RF p3001 amp and 2 RF stage 1 10" subs. It was my first system so it all sounded great to me. Later I began to that the boominess (is that a word?) and then one sub died and now the other has too. Not knowing anything other than the fact that I want much better sound quality than what I had, what can you recommend? About a year ago I heard 2 12" alpines in sealed boxes and was blown away, but I don't want to take up that much space in my trunk. I'm thinking I want just one 12 in a sealed enclosure which I will make and I will need an amp to go with. For the amp and sub I don't want to spend more than $400 if I don't have to, $500 at the max. I shop on ebay, so that can help prices. I might not be doing this right away since I'm only about $600 from getting stage 3, but its something I want to be thinking about so that when I'm ready to spend the money, I know what I want. I guess I'm more concerned with SQ than SPL, but I do like to turn it up every once in a while. Thanks.

I really liked my Diamond Audio Sub I had. 10" in a sealed box. Fit perfect in the side of the trunk.
