REAR wheel aysmetry, are yours equally spaced?

866 Views 9 Replies 7 Participants Last post by  Simon.Starkie
My 04 which I bought new ,has always has the right rear wheel sticking out almost a 1/2 in. More than the left rear if viewed from behind,it also has a degree more camber on the left rear compared to the right... 2deg. Rt.. And 1 degree. Left.
Tires don't wear unevenly but it looks bad IMO,like I hit a curb or something.
This has been covered before, soo I think it's a factory Neon issue.
If you have factory wheels it's not very noticeable, but i have spacers on the back, Soo its noticeable.
My car has 278,000mi. On it and handles like its on rails, i never get tired of it!!

I slotted the rear struts and removed some of the negative camber on the rear. I wanted the negative camber in the front. 278000 miles. Any major issues with the car on your way to those miles?
Get a set of adjustable Lower Control Arms (a set is 4 arms) to solve your right rear from sticking out and the excessive camber that happens because of the "sticking out".
The heim joint LCAs will even improve your handling even more.

The 2 new left LCA arms will be set to the same length as the left rear stock LCAs.
The remaining 2 LCAs will be set 1/4"-1/2" shorter. You will need to experiment in that 1/4"-1/2" range to see what is best for your car's configuration. Toe adjustment will also be set with the new LCAs...I use zero toe angle on my car.

I bought my heim LCAs from "MannyZ" a decade ago but DCR sells the heim, or more expensive poly LCAs in ebay.

I had the Mopar Performance Rear Adjustable Control Arms (two sets each side) installed at a dealership several years ago and THESE made the right tire stick out. Even alignments haven't completely corrected the problem.

I had a bad 3rd. Gear synchro, steering rack and some rust is beginning to appear on the rear quarter wheel openings, and that's about it.
It was like this on the GTI's, and I don't know if it's the same for the SRT-4, but they stuck out on the passenger side just a little to make more room/clearance for the fuel filler neck.

Sounds good enough to me.

the rear stock control arm has adjustment on the bolt located in the subframe. Its a caster bolt and you can loosen and spin it to adjust tow/ camber

FYI
I've got those on my car now and no offset problems on tyre sticking out on either side...
I don't see how infinite adjustment on the upper and lower control arms is unable to rectify.
As with all things suspension related, it's not sufficient to just measure
and make both sides the same length. That's just the starting point
and there are more tweaks to make everything perfect.

I didn't have the offset problem with the original MannyZ control arms I installed in 2004.
They had 4 heim joints on each side for even more infinite adjustment.
But I forgot to add antisieze to the heim threads before screwing them in.
So a couple of them siezed solid as should be expected with screwing stainless-to-aluminium.
My bad.
