Sup all, i was just wondering...

Any opinions on the best Radar Detector. I know most will work, and i'd rather not spend like 2g's on a k40, but i do need to get one, and one that i know people have actually used.
Thanks

If you are willing to spend the money. Go with the Valentine one. Usually around $400-450 with shipping. BEST detector in my opinion. The Escort Passport 8500 or something like that is also supposed to be pretty good. All up to how much you wanna spend.

V 1! Hands down the best detector. Fully upgradable so you don't have to shop for a new detector in a few years. Just send it back and have it upgraded with the latest features.
I have had quite a few radar detectors over the years but never wanted to drop $400 on the V 1. My girlfriend bought me one for Valentines Day about 3 years ago. :D (How fitting) If I would have known how much I was going to like it I would have never wasted money on that other crap.
Ounce you live with the arrows you'll never go back.

V1 v/s Escort 8500

The arrows on the the V1 are great but, the selectivity or falsing on it are way to high. That thing sings like tweety bird on your dash in the city. The 8500 is very close to the same range as the V1 if not better but it doesn't false nearly as much, but no arrows. If you are driving fast enough  you don't need to worry about radar behind you. IMHO all the falsing numbs your attention so the V1 is actually dangerous is my mind. The 8500 is sitting right below the mirror in my SRT.

I have the 8500 as well in the center of the dash at the bottom of the windshield. The only problem I've had with it is the heat here in Vegas. When the detector gets too hot it begins beeping for no reason, and I have to turn it off and let it cool down. Once it's cooled down it will work fine again.. until it gets too hot AGAIN.

Don't be fooled, the 8500 is a nice detector, and will save you %95 of the time that the V1 will save you, but that %5 is costly. And with the arrows, you can tell easily what to ignore and what not to. The range on the v1 for k and ka stomps all over the 8500. The extra sensitivity is why I bought the V1. When it comes to a $150 ticket, and a grand a year in insurance preimum increases, don't go cheap. www.valentine1.com

Don't buy anything from Rocky Mountain Radar, the guys a crook and sells boxes with LED's that do nothing. There are no effective radar jamming devices anywhere. Laser Jammers do work, but the ones that work are fairly expensive (over 1K). Anything cheap, be leary of..

I've heard alot of good things about the V1, but isn't it bigger and more conspicous than the 8500? I needed something stealthy, cause detectors are illegal in my state. I've got the 8500 clipped to my passenger visor.

How about the COBRA radar, since the "WIZ" stores are all closing for good, I though i'd pick one up for a great price. They also have BELL radar's too. Again, i'm aware of V1 and Escort radar.

Any opinions...

My question is how much of a warning do you get?

I had a radar detector that worked great I knew immdeiatly when I was being pulled over. I threw the fucker out the window on my third ticket.

I drive from Southern Ca, to the Bay area all the time with 250miles of flat straight terrain, I know exactly where the cops hide but at night I can't really anticipate those spots cause I can't frickin see them.

Approximatly whats the range on these?

I've picked up hits from 2 miles before. Now that's not standard, on a normal road with typical traffic, I get about 1/2 to a mile range on signal faceing me. Signal facing away from me I get about 1/4 to a 1/2 mile. Thru hills i've picked up ranges up to a mile out. With the V1, you get ample warning if the signal is on and facing you.

Umm, you do know that the V1 has three modes you can set, right? There's an "all bogey's" mode which reports everything (you DON'T want it in this mode in the city, only on the highway), a "logic" mode with greater filtering and an "advanced logic" mode which filters out the majority of the crap signals you get in the city like K-band emmissions from supermarket alarm systems. I've had a V1 for 5 years, no tickets. Same results with my other family members who all use V1's. If you're concerned about cops, V1's have anti-VG2 built-in (VG2 detects detectors) and you can buy a concealed display module which allows you to place the arrows and warnings anywhere you want, effectively blacking out the main unit in the windshield. V1's are also hardware/software upgradeable, so, instead of having to shell out $$ for a new detector every year you simply pay some money to have the V1 upgraded (and it costs a LOT less to upgrade vs. buying a new detector). V1 is the best, hands down.

As for jammers, Rocky Mountain is supposedly the worst out there. I believe Car and Driver or Road and Track had a recent issue (last 3 months) where they had a jammer shootout and they told it like it is. There are a couple that seem to work fairly well. Of course, things like how much frontal area your vehicle has and how much metal is there to reflect signals is a large factor in the effectiveness of any jammer (ie. it's easier to jam signals with a car like a Firebird compares to something like a Tahoe).

What about the cop that sits in an unmarked car on the side of the road, and shoots only as you are beside him??????

Thats how I just got fuckered over. 5+ years of hauling ass and I mean ass, with no tickets, and just one day, crusin I get a ticket...go figure.

Is it the detector or is it just your lucky day?
