Possible Clutch issue 04 neon srt

512 Views 6 Replies 6 Participants Last post by  RTShadow
hello everyone, I have a 2004 neon srt, it’s really in great condition, 129,000km, was running great for a 19 year old car, but as of last week I had noticed that the car pulls abit when the clutch is engaged and car is stopped, also having issues with shifting, 1st and reverse specifically, but other gears are starting to get rough, I had tried loosening the bolt on the shifter cable and put the car in 3rd and re tighten,
I am fairly new to these cars and any insight on what the problem may be before I take it to a mechanic would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance

Could be your clutch fork being worn if it's original....this was my original from last year with a only a little less km's on it. I'm only at 123k km now. Photo is from last year Apr 21....

Simple friction material test.
  1. Park on flat ground with good clearance in front of vehicle.
  2. Engage parking brake
  3. Start vehicle
  4. Shift to first gear
  5. Release clutch
Car should attempt to go forward and stall immediately. If the clutch slips at all, prepare for a clutch job.

tbagg1ns is correct, sounds like a worn clutch fork to me also.

The transmission shifts good when the car is moving BUT when not moving, any gear is tough to shift into...clutch fork.
If you can shift easily into first gear with the engine off (but not when running)... clutch fork.
A well worn (100K miles) clutch fork will no longer fully disengage the clutch.

x3.....investigate the clutch fork

If it is the problem.....swap out the fork, pivot ball & boot, and throw out bearing.
Inspect the clutch, or possibly just swap it out if still original, while you have the trans out too (IMO).
And one step further, would be doing the rear main seal too (assuming it's never been done).

That is exactly how mine behaved before I had the clutch and friends done last year....If they're going to tear in, I recommend doing the input shaft bearing as well. Mine just took a dump after only ~a year with everything else new.

I didn't play around either, that's a lot of work to drop a transmission, cheap insurance just to go new on that stuff. You don't replace a clutch often, may as well replace them.
