Why do people (usually people bashing the SRT) keep saying I'd rather have my power go to all 4 wheels rather than 1 wheel...and about the 5 min vid from dodge, another kid at NASIOC said "Dodge should've show the 1 wheel spinning, haha". Are these guys just retarded or are they actually right?? I've seen all kinds of 1st gen neons leave TWO marks on the ground not one... So these guys must just be totally stupid?? I don't own a SRT yet but I'll be gettin it in like 3 weeks so I haven't actually SEEN one in action. But all this 1 wheel spinning BS really doesn't make any sense to me whatsoever. So, what's the actual truth, although I pretty much already know, just makin sure!

I don't think it always happens, but there are sometimes where only one wheel will lose traction and start spinning.. also called peg-legged :p This is due to the open differential. A limited slip differential (available as a MOPAR part and on the new 04 model) diverts power to the other wheel when one starts to slip.

Some cars w/o LSD will almost always spin just 1 tire, like my friend's Chevy Xtreme Truck.. some cars don't have a problem w/ it though and will spin both tires most of the time under most launching conditions. Hell, my FWD Eagle Talon doesn't have LSD and will even lay 2 tire tracks going in reverse. I didn't really mean to do it, but my g/f pissed me off when she was getting out of my car and since she was walking in front of my car, I threw it in reverse, revved it to about 4500 and let the clutch go.

One of the first mods I'm going to have to get is the LSD then, imagine doin a one wheel burn out, lol, although that's highly unlikly to happen with all the torque in a SRT, I imagine BOTH tires would definitly break loose. All them guys out there bashin on the SRT are just stupid then and say "Ya, it'd be SO cool to do a one wheel burn out...." morons. I hate it when people make up bad crap about the SRT and dis it, just shows how in secure they are about the SRT most likely being way faster than their own car...oh well, I'll just get'em back at the stoplights... .

That is because the SRT-4 has an open diff. not LSD. Power is only given to one wheel. But, Dodge was smart enough to atleast give the car equal length half shafts, which is why you will see both wheels spin in a straight line. It still isn't as nice as LSD, but not a complete FUBAR by Ddoge.

Perhaps, but if you aren't launching pretty straight, or are moving when you lay the strip, a stock 1st gen neon will often leave 1 strip, not 2. It was a big complaint about my first 2 neons (a 96 SOHC, and then a 98 DOHC).

with fwd when your exiting a turn under power, the front inside wheel will have less wieght on it than the outside, which means it will have less traction, and sometimes spin.

i've seen this happen often at local auto-x events with inexperienced drivers driving fwd cars exiting turns with the throttle planted, they go nowhere and the inside tire lights up (sometimes pretty spectacualrly too). This is much more likely to happen with an open front diff on a front driver, with or without equal lenght halfshafts.

from a launch if you drop the clutch from to high rpms, your more likely to have both wheels spin regardless (of lsd or not), because neither will have traction.

edited for speeling..

Is LSD really necessary on a 2003 for just street driving? Can the equal length half-shafts hold up enough? I'm not going to be Auto-X'ing or anything like that, so would I really need it? Silver one should be here in a few weeks too.

It will be fine for just a normal driver...but if you really want to be able to put the power to the ground as well as be able to really pull through some turns....it is worth it.

Ya, a LSD will definitly be at the top of my list for mods, hopefully from Mopar for warranty purposes. I'll probably be racing a LOT of AWD cars like DSM's Imprezas (2.5's and WRX's) this summer, so I'll want this for take offs. I KNOW for sure though Mopar won't have a LSD available by the time I order. I'm going to talk to my dealer in a few days, hopefully should have mine around May 20 if all goes well. I'm even going to try to order up a the Mopar Stage 1 kit if they have them up for sale by then and install it at the dealer before I even drive the car, I doubt it though since it was just a few days ago that the PVO guy was at the track testing it....so I don't think they'll be available by the time I order. Man, that'd be nice thought, brand new SRT, 0 miles, with stage 1 already installed!! Main two mods are LSD and stage 1, I'm going to try to stay away from aftermarket companies for now and wait for the Mopar stuff, all about the warranty...

Actually, although people are just bashing it.. I mean c'mon, a one-wheel burnout is pretty damn funny. It's like a gimp of a hot rod. There are many cars that don't have an LSD but can still be powerful, it's just very funny to see.

Why would you want to do a burnout anyway? I like to keep the revs low on launch, and let the torque do the work, and keep my tires from spinning. Don't bother with all those guys with AWD. Just let them admire your taillights and dual exaust!

Are you asking me why I'd want to do a burnout? If so, I never said I wanted to, I was just wondering about the whole power goin to one wheel and stuff. I definitly am with you though, thats why a LSD is at the very top of the list for mods. The you can have the revs slightly higher at launch and not have to worry as much about spinage. I don't want any wheel spin, I just want all take off and snap your damn head back, LOL. Plus I need to keep up with the AWD guys off the line the best I can!
