hey whats up up i just had a quick question. i have a 98 dodge neon r/t with a sohc motor in it and i know for sure that the dohc 2.0 will bolt right up to the sohc block but will the srt 2.4 dohc head bolt up to my block and if so do i need to change the timming belt tensioner as well.

the SRT head would not bolt up to your block directly as some of the cooling or oil passages dont line up.. if you were going to do the swap I would say the SRT long block would be your best bet.. You would need to use a standalone with crank trigger support more then likely to power the motor though.

alright so now i have another question. i heard that the 2.0 dohc head will bolt to my block. is that true or not? because if so then i will just do that but if not then i will just buy a whole motor but i would rather just chane out the head.

What about doing a N/A 2.4L swap? I thought about that for quite awhile, just decided I didn't have the time. :frogtongu

so explain to my why you can put a dohc head on a sohc blcok they bolt right up. the only thing that it seems that i woluld have to do is to by a dohc computer, wiring harness and timing belt and myabe timing belt tensioner. other than those items i dont see why not. because the head bolts right up with the same head bolts and holes in the block.

ok im going to tell you know you can put the dohc head on a sohc block. i have seen it done on neons.org and yes there is gains in it. i suggest going to neons.org and do a search or ask and i know there is plenty of info out there on the head swap. also i know personally one guy with a 1st gen rt who droped in a 2.4 and turbocharged it into an 13 sec car in utah at 7000 feet above sea level out at rock mountain race way.

what happened to the DOHC head that came with the car ????? motor swap ??? just curious as to why a 98 r/t would have a SOHC when it came with a DOHC.

I think you could get either engine AFAIK. Just like you could get the r/t in 2 or 4 doors. The ACR came in 2 or 4 doors, either SOHC or DOHC flavor.

I'm still not sure why you'd take the time to do a DOHC head swap and not do the whole damn 2.4L :frogtongu

Why even bother with swaping heads to a DOHC? You might be lucky if you get like what, 10-15hp?
You could spend the time and money on the SOHC and make it even faster then the DOHC cars!

I have a 96 Neon SOHC 2dr 5spd.
I bought the car off of ebay w/65k miles on it for $2000.
I put about $2000 into it and it runs 15.0's @ 94mph!

I have......
Mopar pcm w/7200rpm redline
Stock, block, crank, pistons, valves, and rockers.
Fully ported & polished head with 3 angel valve job
2001 Magnum R/T cam and valve springs
INDY intake manifold
Mpx 55mm TB
Home made CAI
Mpx under drive pulley
Pace Setter Header
2 1/2 high flow cat
Pace Setter 2 1/2" cat-back
Booger bushings for the cut down shifter

This is just my work car that I drive everyday, it now has 80k miles on it, looks stock (except the exhaust) and runs down stock GTP's!
I love it!

Kyle is correct. In addition you can use an SRT-4 head on a first gen block with a little modification. You do lose your EGR functionality if you care about that. I happened to use a '02 2.4 head that has provisions for EGR but aside from that it's the same as the SRT-4 head. I've got some decent pictures and a writeup in this thread on neons.org:

Warning, lots and lots of pictures, definatly not dial up friendly.

alright just to let you guys know why my car does not have a dohc motor in it is because i threw a rod and fucked up everything including the head so i could only afford the sohc at the time so that is what i did and now i regret it. but anyways so
BANEONRT what are the little modifications that i have to make to put the 2.4 dohc motoe on my block. and also i haerd that the head would not fit because the oil prts are different in the heads but i dont know if that is true or not.
