2003 SRT-4 vs 1999 Civic Si
Tell you what. I'll compare my new 2003 SRT-4 vs. my 1999 Civic Si, both stock for stock.
Looks -- This is subjective, but I give the nod to the Si. However, the SRT-4 looks are growing on me, and I like the forward lean.
Wheels -- Nicer wheels on the SRT-4, and 17's stock vs. 15's stock on the Si.
Brakes -- SRT-4 slam dunks this one. MUCH MUCH better brakes!!
Handling -- Hard to say, because the dealer put 205/40/17's on my Si before I bought it, so it handled extremely well out of the box. The SRT-4 feels more composed in turns, even with more weight up front. Edge to the SRT-4.
Exhaust -- Another slam dunk for the SRT-4. How can you beat twin exhaust with no mufflers?? Unreal.
Back seat -- SRT-4 wins again. Four doors make the interior space much more usable. Putting baby's car seat in is a breeze now.
Trunk -- Civic wins with a bigger, more usable trunk.
Engine -- They're so completely different! The Si was great fun, with redline at 8000, and power came on at 6000 rpm. The SRT-4 is exactly opposite. SRT-4 wins because of huge torque and more power, delivered very smoothly.
Moddability -- Related to engine. Factory turbo will make it MUCH easier to mod the SRT-4 and get large gains for less cash. SRT-4 wins big here.
Aftermarket -- Si is the clear winner for now. There's so much on the market, it's hard to pick. SRT-4 may catch up, who knows.
Dash -- Edge goes to the SRT-4 for cool instrument panel and boost gauge.
Shifter -- Si wins for leather wrapped shifter vs. cheap plasticky one in the SRT-4.
Clutch -- So far, I think the SRT-4 clutch wins. Seems better matched and beefier. The Si clutch could barely hold the stock power. Add 5-10 hp, and it started slipping.
Resale -- Based on past history, nod goes to the Honda. SRT-4 is an instant cult classic, so I may be proved wrong in a few years.
Reliability -- Again, based on past history, the Honda wins. I hope Dodge proves me wrong. So far, so good with my SRT-4, but I've had it less than a week.
Seats -- I love the SRT-4 seats, though I can imagine some folks might hate 'em. SRT-4 wins for racing seats vs. Si's plain old normal seats.
Straight line performance -- Slam dunk for the SRT-4. Runs 14.1 or so stock in the quarter mile vs. 15.7 for the Si. Both numbers from C&D, so it's a fair comparison.
Price -- Very similar. Si was $17.9K retail four years ago vs. $20K retail for the SRT-4. With inflation, that's very close.
OVERALL -- If the SRT-4 warped back in time to 1999 and I had my choice then between it and the Si, there's no doubt I would have picked the SRT-4 because of the performance and moddability. I was excited and happy with my Si in 1999, and that's even more true today with the SRT-4.
If I could dream a design for under $20K, this would be it. I think Dodge hit a home run. If reliability and resale hold up, it could be a grand slam.
