2004 Lamborghini Gallardo

The body panels are of lightweight aluminum, as is the underlying structure; the spaceframe is a combination of cast and extruded parts that are welded, riveted, or bolted together, ensuring exceptional stiffness.

Just like Lamborghini V-12s and V-8s of yore, the new V-10 has two overhead camshafts per bank. Valve timing is continuously variable on intake and exhaust. The engine musters 492 horsepower at 7800 rpm and 376 pound-feet of torque at 4500 rpm.

Lamborghini describes the car as "mid-rear-engined" because its gearbox sits behind the longitudinally mounted engine. This configuration puts 58 percent of the car's 3153 pounds on the rear wheels.

Thanks to its Teutonic tutelage, Lamborghini's new Gallardo presents exceptional ergonomics and material quality and packs a load of high technology, including an available six-speed sequential manual gearbox with paddle shifters.
