Help me troubleshoot: Shaking on Accel..

Hey guys.. search is pretty useless right now so I'm just gonna post and get some insight from you.

Recently I noticed that my car would shake badly under acceleration, kind of a side to side shaking.. felt like take off in an airplane kinda..

Now, let me say right up front this is not wheel shimmy from aftermarket rims.. i've been down that road many years ago.

Anyway.. my initial conclusion was a bad axle as I could hear clunking when coming to a stop.. replaced the driver side axle(which WAS bad), but shaking remained. I haven't heard that clunking noise since then so I assume the passenger side one is ok, but havent ruled it out 100%.

Next thing we looked at was my control arm bushings. I have the solid ones from psi fi and theyre a few years old. We pulled the control arms, and made sure the pivoting joint inside the bushings could move freely(they couldn't, when we first pulled them). We broke them free, greased them up a bit, and reinstalled. Shaking persists.

So,.. at this point I don't know where to look next. Passenger side axle? Maybe somehow the traction bushings are completely shot(not sure what could be "shot" about a solid peice of metal though)?

Anyone with ideas feel free to throw them up! Thanks!

broken mounts?
Also, does it shake on WOT accl only?
I've seen bad plug wires cause horrible shake and vibrations above 8PSi
pass axle......
ill agree with passenger side axle, its broken with a seperated joint on the transmission side, happened to me

thats interesting... it doesnt have to be WOT to get the shaking, but always in boost.. I'll drive it a bit tomorrow and try to see if i can pinpoint a specific starting point as far as psi or rpm's
to the guys saying the axle.. is there a relatively easy way i can verify that?

also.. i have an 03.. since only the 04/05 axles are now available, do i need a new intermediate shaft as well(or will the 04 axle connect to the 03 IS)?

Yes but this would also cause a good amount of hesitation... is power delivery ok smoger?

yeah,.. the only thing wrong with power delivery is my brain wont let my foot stay planted once i feel the shaking
You dont need a new intermediate shaft for the 04 axles. You should have replaced both of them in the first place. I would check for broken mounts.

as in motor mounts? they're fine(at least the top and bottom one are, not positive about the third one)
bump to find out if i can check to see if my axle is bad without removing it from the car...

Check axle. I had the same problem. Turned out being pass. axle and also, have you had a flat recently? I had a flat and put in can of Fix-a-Flat and it turned out that it didn't spread correctly, thus throwing off the balance of the front of the car, making the car shake.:readclose

Is there a way to check the axle without pulling it off the car?

No flats, but for future reference,.. i think fix a flat is only an emergency fix and i think even the can tells you to replace the tire ASAP :)

Yea, it was a emergency, but I had used it before with no problems:jester: Just get under the car, grab the axle, and check it for play.
can i jack it up to check it? or does it need to be on the ground?

THANKS!
