Damn clunking noise in the steering wheel. Has anyone else taken theirs in to the dealer to be fixed? Mine and Dad’s both do it and they acted like there isn’t a problem. I pulled up a TSB for a Neon “19-002-04 APR 04 Steering Column - Clicking Noise When Turning “ I called the service guy since my dad’s car is still there *fixed*. I told him about the TSB and he wouldn’t even check the TSB because it isn’t from the right VIN. He is like you’ll have to come show us the problem... GGGRRRRR. I guess they can’t turn the wheel and hear it pop...

Well I went up there with my TSB and they said my 03 could be fix with a new spring and bearings. My Dad's didn't mean the deadline... so they said no to the TSB fix. I couldn't leave the car there another day since my Dad needs it to get to work and I really don't see the need for me to drive back up there and turn the wheel for them. Anyone with an 04 have the clunk?

That sucks to hear man! So are you telling me that they will not fix an 04 with this problem? They fixed mine no q's asked with quite a few suspension mods.

It is defenitly in the column...just that the TSB is not out for the SRT4 but only the normal Neons, either way I can not see how the dealership could not link two and two together and make the fix :).

I'm having the same problem with my 04"SRT4 I had to fight with the service manager about it. He tried to give me some B.S,. that it was my suspension that was causing the problem and that it may not be under WARRANTY! After explaining to the so called experts at the dealership , that I've been around cars and bikes for 20 years and taking both there head mechanic and service manager for test drives that they final agreed with me that it was the column No shi%$#@!*&^. To fix the problem they are ording a brand new column for me and yes this part is covered under the WARRANTY so don't let any dealer tell that its not covered.

Take it to the dealership, they fixed mine. The TSB's reference earlier '04 and '03 SRT-4's also..

The first time the dealership replaced it, they just flopped in a new Steering column.. It was still clunking.. A few months later, I took it in again after the TSB came out and they replaced it with a revised steering column that has an o-ring - finally, PROBLEM fixed and no clunk.

When going to the dealership, print out the TSB and hand it to them..

New '04 SRT4's won't have this problem anymore, they've been installing the new revised steering column on them from the factory (at least if that star tech guy was right).

My 04 has the noise in the steering column, and it was in the last batch of 04's made (early - mid July), so I don't know if they have fixed the issue in the latest columns. Mine is due for it's first servicing in the next couple of weeks. I will ask the dealership about it.

Later.

I'm getting a clucking noise when accelerating, and decelarating. I can hear it as I accelerate, like when the front end comes up, and then again when decelerating when I let off the gas. Sounds/feels like it is coming from the front driverside.

I can also hear like a "squeal-like" noise when turning. It sounds like tires on blacktop, and I know it's not low tire pressure. Come to think of it, it also makes the noise when just slowing to a stop, or driving at a slow speed.

Anybody know bout this?

Some 03 SRT have that TSB.
Hmm I could not find it for the SRT4 specifically but it does state 2003/2004 Neon and ANY under the type category which I have to assume means everything from the base model up to the SRT4 included!

TSB#1900702 from NHTSA this is for 2004 models only (but there is likely one for the 2003's as listed in the first post)

well...............................

I went to the dealership and replaced the power steering column + Clock Spring + Wheel Alignment = Clunk is still there... Go figure that one out... LOL

It seems that when turning the wheel it's still making the clunk noise but not as much as before.. So I guess it improved a little...

Now for the zipppppppppppppppp zippppppppppppp sound when turning the wheel that most of us have been experiencing, it's probably the power steering cables or something like that... I need to go in for an appointment....
