Clunking Rear Struts/ HOTCHKIS

Just installed Hotckins....on the ride home noticed that both rear are clunking.......went back to shop for a quick visual every thing seems tight.....one thing i am worried about is we did not install provided bump stops becouse we assumed all four were for the front, but would this cause a nocking sound over every bump???????? any input would be appreciated

I think you nee to remove the strut nut and add a few washers to get rid of the clunk. I have a slight clunk and am going to try the washers soon.

I installed mine about a week ago. The passengers side clunks bad, I put the bump stop in.

What would the washers do?

The clunking is most likely the top strut mount, if you look inside of it you'll notice that theres a gap between the top and bottom of it, with a rubber coated washer inside. if you fill this gap (has been done with rubber hose/windshield sealant) then the clunk should go away/be reduced. It sounds like the same problem experianced by people with aftermarket coilovers...Do some searches, there's quite a few detailed descriptions of this problem/fixes for it on here

If we are using the stock strut assembly, why would this situation be aggrevated by lowering the car. If I re-installed everything correctly, shouldn't everything mesh up like it did before, except now the car is lower?

So say I remove the strut assembly again. Where would I want to put the windshield sealant? On the top of the assembly around the perimeter of it?

Do the install correctly and you won't need to ghetto rig stuff with glue and washers...

Is a "Hotckin" a swaybar or strut assembly?

If it is a strut assembly, are you using the OEM springs, a lowering spring from another manufacturer, or did it come with it's own springs?

Can you link me to a picture of a Hotckin someplace on the web?

Dale

I believe that this is a Hotchkin:

The clunking is most likely caused by the wooden wheels and medieval-type suspension.

Stop making fun of people or I'll post the pics of what happened to your car last night while you were out looking at 'fall foilage' and everybody else got together to work on your car....

It's truely amazing how far $150 can go at Pep Boys.... and at $25 a head, it was really worth it. By the way, the chrome dooredge trim (40 ft of it?) was not my idea, and peeling back the protective covering that exposes the sticky tape on it was definately not my idea....

Hey Dale....yes the Hotchkis are lowering springs, the bump stops in the rear are oem (onley installed the shorter ones in front) and it is not a bottoming sound or feel. It happens on moderate bumps and does sound like a washer or somthing will fix it....have been doing many searches and this seams to be common but can,t really nail down a satisfactory answer, but i have to figure it :flame:

Just for that I'm not bringing you bagels this morning.
At first I thought he meant "Hotchkis", as I can't find anything related to "Hotchkins" on the net.

I notice the clunking most when the rear is uneven on the road and gets shaken side-to-side. The sound always seems to originate from the passenger's corner of the car.

? I believe I installed my Stage 2 coilovers correctly, but I immediately started getting the clunk. The only way I found to fix it was to fill that space in the rear strut mounts. (I "pioneered" the rubber hose technique. :) )

Rubber hose??? Any link to the info? That sounds smarter than urethane!
I simply cut 3 or 4 inches of rubber vacuum line and jammed it into the gap. I don't remember the size, but it was probably something like 5/16" OD. Yes, you have to take the strut off to do this. It's the gap on the bottom side that needs to be filled.
