A 40-year-old driver was killed during a race at Capitol Raceway last night when his car careened into a jersey wall on the quarter-mile Crofton dragstrip, county firefighters said.
Firefighters received a call at 6:44 p.m. about the accident at 2642 Capitol Raceway Road.

The driver was taken by ambulance to the Baltimore Washington Medical Center in Glen Burnie, where he was later pronounced dead. His identity was not available last night.

Capitol Raceway officials refused to comment, other than confirming the accident and saying the driver had been racing there for "a few years."

When Katrina Kilpatrick and Shannon Turner arrived with friends shortly after 7 p.m., they saw ambulances, police cars and fire trucks. The staff announced that races would be canceled for the evening out of respect for the driver's family.

"We saw people hanging their heads and we knew something (bad) happened," said Ms. Kilpatrick, of Severn.

"It's very sad, but hopefully that was what he liked doing," said Ms. Turner, of Glen Burnie. "At least he passed away doing something he liked doing."

Last month, a 16-year-old girl was hospitalized after she wrecked a dragster on the track. Sydney Walls had been racing junior dragsters and was scheduled to test to become licensed for regular dragster racing at the time of the accident.
