The 2006 Onelap event is almost here, it starts on May 5th. This year there are three SRT-4's, an SRT-8 Charger, and an SRT-8 Jeep entered.

We'll be returning with the Kicker Car Stereo 2004 SRT-4 that won it's class the past two years in a row.

Most of you know the story of the car, ordered before the 2003 event from a less than reputable dealer that pawned the WRX that I 'traded-in' for it, and then forgot to order the SRT-4. We ended up not in an SRT-4 in the 2003 event, instead beating the snot out of a 1997 Saturn SC2 with nitrous for a class win in Economy.

The car arrived in time for the 2004 event, and the Mopar Performance Stage 2 turbo upgrade arrived the day before the event started. Co-driver and fellow SRT-4 owner, Dunnie Morgan and I installed the first S2 kit in the country and headed out the next morning on the adventure of a lifetime.

On day 2.5, in between Heartland Park Topeka, Kansas (the site of the SRT Nationals this year) and Infineon Raceway in California, we clobbered a deer on Route 6 in Utah at about the speed limit (wink wink) totalling the brand new car.

We had the car towed 99 miles to Hinckley Dodge in Salt Lake City (AAA free tow, 100 miles or less) where an endurance racing team of Viper Techs taped and tie-wrapped the car together (literally) and sent us on our way in less than 24 hours. The next morning we found ourselves in Las Vegas, and we went on to finish first in Mid-Priced Sedan, 20th overall. The real story though was the generousity of the SRT Forums membership. 4 Viper Techs, times 13 hours, equals three maxed out credit cards and no gas money to finish the event. While we were thrashing the car back into shape, you organized a collection that allowed us to finish the event. I admit to getting teary eyed, but it was only because we hadn't slept for about 48 hours and it's really dusty in Utah.

We brought the car back in 2005. As usual, S3R arrived at 4pm the night before the event started. We testdrove the install to the event start.

This time we encounter no drama of our own. Sure, I had to regap the sparkplugs once, and tie-wrap the vacuum lines, but the only real work was done by SRTFourm members who changed the oil in the car for us in New Hampshire. We probably wouldn't have even done that much, but we felt bad for the guys from AMS who couldn't keep water in their superfast EVO.

We went on to another first in class finish, and placed 8th overall. Not bad for a Neon.

27 days from today, the 2006 event begins. We're bringing the same car, but the team is much bigger. Eight people (including myself) will travel in two vehicles. The SRT-4 will shuttle returning co-driver Jamin (I can wreck any car) Cummings, inherited co-driver Nancy (don't even THINK about cheating) Becker, and myself. We'll be self-contained and traveling alone.

We also have a media van. The team of five will be responsible for the four cameras on my car, and cameras on four other cars every day. They will be uploading video for your enjoyment a couple times a day as they take in the traveling circus know as Cannonball.

Miki Kologranic returns as head Camera guy. His back-up is Brian Kissack. Chris Leiter and Chris Medico are your video editing experts, and David Reynolds will back them up, as well as keep the website updated for you.

You can preview the website, and get an idea of David's sense of humor at;
LER One Lap site

Let us know what you think, press the buttons, be our beta testers. If you can translate latin, I'd appreciate it, I know David is being sneaky about something...

Regards,
Dale

Here's the address for this year's Web site: :)

Sorry, Dale, I already got rid of the Latin and other fluff in preparation for semi-public viewing. Even all the comments I added about what a great Web designer LER must have.

Erich is driving the Jeep.... Expect a top five run from that...

The Charger is Howard Lefever, who is more interested in breaking the world record for number of strip joints visited in one week than winning the event....

Would love to spill the beans on it, but we've got competitors on the forums. They've already hired my driving coach, who spent the fall and winter in my car, can't give them everything....:eveilgrin

We did find another 40 whp yesterday, off the juice, thanks to the Arizona folks. I seriously doubt we'll be out horsepowered by any of the SRT-4's entered, and should give the WRX'en a run for their money.

The new tires arrived yesterday, I expect we'll be taking the baseball bat to the fenders again to fit them under there. Last year's 235 width tires look skinny next to this....:eeeek:

See you in Topeka,
Dale

NICE.

Soon your gonna have to custom make your suspinsion just to fill the bill. At what point do you decide the control arm/strut suspinsion is holding you back? I have not looking into it much but it seams i would be a mild thing to switch to duel wishbone and shocks. Maybe next year right? lol

Dale, Are you going to have that bug in your car agian this year so we can keep track of your every move?
I believe the answer is "yes", the VehicleLocate.net system will be operational. Last year we had some technical difficulties with it, our location was so popular that servers across the country that handled their customer traffic were crashed. This year, we'll start off with the system on it's own server and with it's own bandwidth.

Speaking of bandwidth, our video project is bigger than many realize. Last year 450,000 gig of bandwidth was used in two weeks, transfer rates exceeded 5meg many times, and our servers never went down.

This year, we expect a lot more traffic, so we turned to ELM2.com for better connections, and dedicated equipment, maintained by SRT enthusiasts.

The videos will be cohosted on Streetfire, Putfile, and Googlevideo. Many of the Onelap teams have direct links to our site from their page, so that thier friends can better follow their progress. We also have direct links from Onelapofamerica.com

It's a strange thing, we do okay during the event, and should do okay this year, but the Video Project uses most of the time and resources.

Be sure to visit the "other site" at http://www.returntothecannonball.com/
They might be able to put something useful up, and might even be able to keep up with the event this year. You can tell they are a paid advertising company, they don't even know what car they are driving.... I'm sure the Onelap organizers would be interested in knowing what you think about the Privateer vs Professional competition... :eveilgrin

Have fun,
Dale

Great news, Forum Member Vooduguru, owner of Vehiclelocate.net is again providing the team with a satellite locating device for the vehicle.

We consider last year a learning experience, where you crashed their servers before the event even started, and look forward to representing VehicleLocate.net again.

We will go live with the locating device on May 1, prior to that we'll be testing the website and it's response to our increased loads.

Watch him hit a deer :wah?!: But the weird thing is, if you stop to look at it, someonne in a pickup truck will ask you, are you going to take it home ? Or can I take it home to eat ...

Dale, just watch out up in NC, the MAN sits on the side of the road in an unmarked Camaro Z28.
