Trans problem

Hello, just bought my first srt4. It’s been neglected and I’ve put about 3k into it so far. It’s really coming together well. It has 140,000 and still runs strong. I am having a little issue though and I need some opinions. So I’ve been doing a lot of research and haven’t found a straight forward answer yet. I had the first and reverse problem when I bought it. So I started with the clutch. I put on a CM Stage 3 clutch, agp clutch fork, pivot ball, boot and clip. Trans fluid change. Cross over adjustment. I’ve done a lot more but those are pertaining to my current issue. So at a rolling stop and I try to put it in first it grinds. If the car is sitting still it does not grind. Also 3rd gear does not pop out or grind and is not hard to get into but when shifting up to 3rd it sounds/feels like a click as if it almost wants to grind but doesn’t. So my question is will a pwerks 1/3/5 gear shift extender fix this problem?? I’m mainly worried about first gear. I really hope it’s not a synchro but if it is then so be it. I read that the trans does not have to be removed to change synchros. Is this true?? Also does anyone have Experience with the CM Stage 3 clutch? I was wondering if it will hold about 350 to 360 hp?

The clutch starts to engage pretty high up. I have to bend my leg to let it all the way up and for it to fully engage. I put on a ragetek pedal pivot too. I just haven’t had the chance to adjust it yet. Also I contacted pwerks today and they said their 1/3/5 gear extender should take care of the grinding in first. so I’m gonna give this a try

I believe I ordered the same clutch last year, installed it in October.

Clutch Masters Stage 3 Modular Clutch, 03-05 Neon SRT-4: 1

Mopar OEM Pivot Ball: 1

AGP Forged Clutch Fork, 03-05 Neon SRT4: 1

Mopar OEM Clutch Pivot Fork BOOT & CLIP, 03-05 Neon SRT-4: 1

I don't have much input yet though, as my transmission catastrophically failed 21 days after I rebuilt it LOL

I have to laugh or I'd cry, hopefully you don't have something similar happen. My biggest issue was that the transmission ate the 4th gear needle bearing, but I also had the typical 3rd popout and hard shifting. The car hasn't been touched since I put it in the garage in October last year after trailering it home. I have a lot of work to do

OP what kind of condition are the cables in? They can stretch out over time and get damaged due to being close to the turbocharger. Did you change out the Master and slave yet? @ 140k miles and if they are original I would replace those too. But do the braided hose mod for the new master cylinder. Makes install 100x easier.

That is what happened to my silver one but it was the 3rd gear needle bearing. Happened at like 128k miles or so. Luckily it happened about a mile from my house and I limped it home. I took the transmission out myself and dropped it off to a transmission shop and they diagnosed it for me. I didn't have any 3rd gear popouts prior or any shifting issues prior to it happening. What fluid were you running out of curiosity?

I’m sorry to here that. And yes that’s the same clutch I bought. Good luck with getting her fixed
SR3, I have looked at the cables and they are not in bad condition by the looks of them. Also I was gonna get the Slave/master combo from dcr. I believe it has a coated steel braided line. Also does anyone know if the synchros are able to be replaced without removing the entire transmission? I read somewhere that you can just remove the cover on the driver side and pull out the gears that way?

Yes, it can be done that way, there are youtube videos out there showing it. If you are comfortable with your clutch install, it is probably the best option, saves a lot of time.

I got another used one and it shifts better than when mine was brand new,
I think we both had lemon trannys ,as my orig. suffered from many of the same issues yours had.

I was a fool... other than the minor transmission issues I never had any problems, so other than changing the oil and fueling the car up, I never messed with anything else.

This included changing the transmission fluid. I waited until like 75k before I switched it, and I really think that was a big part of it. While I was responsible with how I drove the car, which included going to California and back, to Cleveland and back, and to Detroit and back, I also raced the car at Fontana, at SRT-4 Midwest Nationals, and a couple other places. That's some pretty hard driving, even if the vehicle was not much beyond a stage 1 car.

So I don't know if the transmission was a lemon or not to be honest. I ran what the car came with until that time, then switched it out with the Mopar ATF. I've heard ALL the opinions, everyone has one, so I don't need to hear more. I researched it for a long time before coming up with a decision.

Mine is a little hard to put in 1st if I'm still rolling too. I have the extenders, new fork, new pivot ball, new TOB, DCR clutch pedal pivot, and all new hydraulics when the motor went in. Tranny is stock with 114k, so maybe it's getting tired. I don't know how hard it's first 100k miles were since I bought the car with a hole in the block then, lol. I just try to remember not to shift into 1st until fully stopped like I should anyway.

I hear ya, I know it’s somewhat of a common problem. I’m gonna go ahead and get the dcr slave/master combo, dcr carbon lined synchro blocker ring set and pwerks 1-reverse extenders. That should fix the problem I’m guessing. I’m gonna do a little more research to see if there’s anything else I should do while I have the gear set out. But I want everything right before I put on this agp turbo kit. BW S256! Sometimes I think to myself that I should have bought a different car because of all the money I’ve put in it plus I’m still sinking more money in it too. But I’ve already went this far. So I mine as well finish the project 😑😃

Thank y'all for the help an advice. Restoring this is gonna be a project and I am glad that yall help people like me threw it. I will probably go the aftermarket route with Maperformance and just get a whole new one since I domt want to take chances with a user one. Just realizing how hard it is to get parts for this car lol. It is completely worth it though.
