Default Timing-Advance, Retard

How does affect the performance? It seems to be a big issue when more boost is added. Can someone explain the relationship it has. Thanks.

More timming = more power
More timming is more prone to detonate, ping or knock
More boost = Is also more prone to detonate

Cheap gas (low octane) will cause you to detonate and the knock sencer will pull (retard) timming.

Timming is "when" the spark ignites the A/F mixture.
All you want to do is hold good timming with out detonation. If you are worried about it run better gas.

Is it a good idea to adjust the timing yourself or should you just run the recommended gas, 91 or higher, and let the ECU adjust accordingly?

When you refer to more timing you are saying advance the timing - when it is said "pulling" timing is that refering to retarding the timing?

The factory computer adjusts timing as it sees fit. There is no adjustment that you or I can make to it.

If the factory computer sees knock(knock does not have to be audible) then the computer will retard the timing. This is comonly refered to as "pulling timing".

If you are stok, 93 octane gas will give you the best timing curve. If you're car is modified, then higher octane gas will give you more ignition advance IF there is knock. If there is no knock then running higher octane gas will actually decrease the cars performance.

Thats why it is good to look for power in NON-OCTANE limited modifications like TBs,Intake Manifolds,Exhaust,CAMs. Even though they could be traced back to needing more octane.
