Default Scangauge Alternative?

Hey guys,

I've been thinking about getting a scangauge so I can watch Knock and injector duty cycle and the like. I don't really want to put another gauge in my car due to limited room I do have a car pc (car computer, and yes it's a complete computer...call me a geek if you like) installed in my car, and was wondering if I could buy a scantool that would just connect to the computer and do the same thing the scangauge would do. Is that possible? I did a google search and it looks like they do sell them, but I wanted to make sure that they will work first. Any thoughts?

I would toss up some pics of the computer and how it's installed in my dash, but I'm not at home to take them. (It was a pain to install though)!

Let me know!

Chris

Yea take some pics. I remember back in college we installed computers in our cars to play MP3's. We had it running nothing but winamp, bought an LCD screen to mount up front and wrote a program in Delphi to display the MP3 tags on it. And now all you need is to buy a headunit that plays MP3 CD's or hook up your MP3 player to it. Go figure.

Yeah it is pretty cool. I won't be home for a couple of weeks, but I will take some pics and post them as soon as I can. This is pretty cool. It's a 1GHZ processor with a gig of ram running windows xp. I was able to get a 12 volt power supply so it's wired directly into the car without an inverter. It's pluged into the back of the head unit (like you mentioned) so there's full surround sound I'm running a front end software called "Centrafuse" which plays mp3's/dvd's everything. It even claims to have an obd-2 feature that can diagnose engine functions and sensors (which is where I got the idea for a scan tool).

Any thoughts on a scan tool that can hook to the computer?

OBDII Diagnostic ScanTools and code-readers

That might work. If that program you have already supports OBDII, then all you need is an OBDII-serial cable.

how about AutoTap? I used to use those when I had a Camaro. I'm sure you could have one that worked for our cars.

Ok, I think I found one that sounds good, pluss it's a LOT cheaper than the scangauge and it works with any laptop (or in my case a car computer!)

check it out if you want to:

Thanks again!

i'm still reading on it to see if it measures knock and injector duty cycle and stuff like that.

I'm pretty sure centrafuse still requires the adapter (like the Elmscan 5) not just the cable.

If you go to mp3car.com (i looked in their store and forums) it says that you need the adapter.

By the way, this is where I got the majority of the stuff to build the computer...if anyone is interested.

That cable is an ELM-based OBD adapter. But you probably know more about it than I do, I just learned about this
