Default How-To: Tighten E-Brake

I have replaced my pads on the rear of the car, but my E-Brake does nothing and i mean nothing for me on a hill, i have to leave car in gear, if someone could tell me how to tighten the E-brake that would be swell. Thanks

I just did it on my first gen neon, and the mechanics shouldn't be any different. Where the e-brake cables go into the rear brake housing there is a small rubber grommet. With the rear of the car on jack stands it's much easier to get to, and if it's lowered damn near impossible. Take the grommet off and you will see a small gear that can spin up and down. Forget about the "special tool" the FSM mentions and grab a small screw driver orequivalent shaped tool. spin the tire with one hand start adjusting the gear in one direction until the tire grabs, now back off the gear until right after it lets go. Do the same for the other side and your good...

$0.02...

You will most likely need to adjust the brake SHOES inside your rear rotors.

Take off the rear rotor so you can see and get a better understanding of how it works. There will be a "starwheel" in the middle above the spindle. Turn the starwheel so that the shoes are being pushed away from each other and try to refit your rotor. When you have to wiggle it (the rotor) to get it over the shoes, then you are pretty close.

Further adjustment can be done through a hole in the backing plate for the brake "drum". You should be able to spin your tire by hand (w/ medium force) and get two revolutions out of it.

Let us know how it goes!

Mine is the same way it doesnt work so I bought some shoes awhile back. When I took everything apart to swap the rotors my shoes were brand new still. So I definitely need to adjust mine maybe when the rain clears up.

In theory the parking brake shoes should last FOREVER! They are "thoeretically" only used to hold your car stationary and therefore should not have any wear factors applied to them.
