HOW-TO: Short Throw Shifter Install

***** Videos showing how to remove the clips are at the end of this post *****

This is for nighcores HOW TO!

nighcore wrote on 07-17-2003 10:09 PM:
This install is already easy on it's own, but this will make it even easier.

Tools Needed/Suggested:
Philips Head Screwdriver
Flathead Screwdriver
1/2" Socket and Ratchet
Rubber mallet (Not REALLY necessary)
Torque Wrench (in. lbs.) if you are getting techinical.

First Step - Removal of Shift Knob and Boot:
Tools used: Bare hands
Easiest way to remove shift knob is to pull up with force while twisting back and forth a little bit. Sometimes it's too ahrd to just pull straight up. Just wiggle it while pulling and it should come off with ease. To remove the shift boot, just squeeze the sides of the base of the boot and pull up. There is one large tab located in the front part of the boot, so pull the front half out last.

Second Step - Removal of Center Console:
Tools used: Philips Screwdriver
Remove a total of 6 screws shown in the pictures below.

After removal of all screws, pull your Emergency Brake Handle very firmly as far as you can get it. This will help in removal of the the console. It's easiest to pull up the rear half and then work the front half of the console until the E-brake handle is through. Then just set aside the console.

Third Step - Removal of Shifter Mechanism and Attaching Parts:
Tools used: 1/2" socket w/ ratchet, Flat head Screwdriver
Before remove the 4 main floor pan bolts, remove both cable retaining clips and remove cables from shifter.

Easiest way to remove the clips is to work them out with a Flatheaded screwdriver or you can try pulling them out with pliers. These can be tough to remove at first, but don't be afraid to pull or pry hard. Also using the flathead screwdriver, pry the cables from the shifter. You may or may not pry off the bushings when doing this, but just reinstall them if they come off. Now be sure to pull the cables out the side of the shifter base and just push them aside.

******** Watch A Video On How To Remove The Tabs And Cables ********

(Both about a minute long)

How to Remove The Tabs
How To Install And Reinstall The Cables

************************************************** ***********

Now remove the 4 floor pans bolts and remove the shifter.

Now just follow these from bottom to top to install the new shifter. If you are a technical guy, torque the 4 floor pan bolts down to 105 inch pounds (** NOT foot pounds **). Everything else just tighten down. To re-install the cable retainer clips, I pushed them by hand as good as I could get them, then tapped them with a rubber mallet.

I know this is pretty detailed for such an easy install, but some people need a little more help than others. If anyone has any additions or comments, let me know. I look forward to helping with more how-to's in the future.
