Default How-To: Replace Steering Wheel (Viper)

Not resposible for any misshaps or death from this how to: Blah blah blah

This best I can do since I already did this once and I am now going back to write it up. If I left something out or you need more explanation just ask I'll help where I can.

Tools: 8mm socket 1/4 inch drive and rachet
13mm socket 3/8 inch drive or bigger and rachet
extension for the 13mm
Hammer
A friend
And small straight screwdriver
optional: 2 ohm resistor and electrical tape if you don't want to have an airbag light on.

1) Disconnect battery
2) locate and remove the 8mm bolts on the sides of the srt steering wheel.
shown here..

3) the airbag will come right off. Disconnect the horn and the air bag connectors. A small straight screwdriver may help but be careful with the airbag one they can be tricky and you don't want to brake it in case you ever want to go back to stock.

4) Loosen the 13mm there in the center of the wheel. Run it out till theres about 5 or 6 threads left to go. Now you need your friend.

5) Put your legs up under the wheel and grab the wheel on the sides like you were driving. have your friend put the 13mm socket on the bolt and have them hammer on the bolt while you pull as hard as you can with your arms and push up with your legs. This will help jar the wheel off the column.
I guess you could use a steering wheel puller but not many people have one and this way works. Once its loose take the bolt the rest of the way out and its off.

6) Put the viper wheel on. Run the wires for the horn and airbag through the hole in the wheel. Line the wheel up with the splines and push it on, tighten the 13mm bolt, check to make sure your wires don't get pinched and that the wheel goes all the way down on the column.

7) plug the horn up. It works perfect with the connection on the viper airbag. DO NOT Plug in the srt airbag connector into the viper airbag as I'm not sure what might happen and it could be bad!!!
8) go ahead and install the viper airbag and tighten the 3 8mm bolts on that. you would be done but you would have an airbag light on in the dash.

So if u don't want that..
9) use the 2 ohm resistor. Put one end into one side of the connector of the srt and one end into the other. Then tape it up so it stays put. Then put the wire out of the way so you can finish. install the viper airbag tighten the 3 8mm bolts around the sides and your done.

10) connect the battery and drive on. just be careful you no longer have a driverside airbag.

Forget all that stuff I just said about an AIRBAG DELETE. Put your srt airbag inside the viper wheel! Thanks apexanimal!

take the srt airbag apart carefully. It comes apart in many pieces. your gonna need the bag and the airbag inflator.

take the viper airbag apart. you don't need the airbag or the airbag inflator.

Center the SRT airbag inflator on the metal piece of the viper wheel, mark and drill 4 holes.

on the SRT airbag there is a metal line up pin, you need to cut that off.

now put the airbag into the mounting piece you drilled then put the inflator on the back of that. I put 2 nuts on it to hold it all together for the next step.

which I don't have a picture for, But basicly put it down inside the viper cover. its a snug fit and locks in. make sure to keep the ground wire and horn wire out you'll need to hook those up.

lastly with a little triming or the brackets that help secure the cover to the mount. everything will bolt up. be sure to put the ground under one of the four nuts.

now install your viper covered SRT airbag into your viper wheel Plug in your airbag and horn and thats it.
Just becarefull your airbag now works but you don't want to test it!

also one thing you notice after doing this mod is that the steering wheel is a little closer to the headlight switches. After a day or two you get used to it so its really no big deal.

good write up. But if I did have that kind of cash to drop it would go strait to the turbo fund. That does look good though!

Your insurance company will love you for removing the DS airbag. Hope you never, ever get in a wreck cause if you do they will probably deny your claim. Seen it happen.

Link doesn'y work but I'm interested. If its the wheel only then yea 200 is a good deal. The airbag part is whats expensive and i belive i got a good deal on that, so they made a little money on the wheel oh well. Anyone that can get the entire setup for 600 or less is getting a steal. They charged me 250 for the wheel and 450 for the airbag and that included shipping. No big deal to me I got what I wanted!

Why not just remove the headlight switches & install paddle shifters in place ..LOL. Then write a how-to for us. So what is the circumference & diameter of the viper vs srt-4 steering wheel? Great Job! on the install.

What exactly would happen if you did hook up the airbag wire?
Wouldnt it still work fine?
