dry as in not wet maybe you moved too fast or didnt make enough passes, make sure you cleaned it. the dusty cover is basically overspray, overspray happens from indirect spraying, i.e.you spray it next to your car and get paint dots all over your finish. also what paint did you use?

I want to paint my whole wheel black, is it easy to do without taking off the tires?

it might be hard to mask off the wheelswipe where it meets the rim with laquer thinner so tape will stick to it when you mask off the wheels. if you get overspray on them it should wipe off with thinner

I used the dupi-color high performance wheel paint and I have some dupli-color wheel clear coat but since I dont like the finish product I havent even put a coat of that on yet. Im not saying it not possible, but I dont think I moved to fast ormake enough passes on all of my rims, I could see one or even 2 but not all 4. It almost seems like the second layer doesnt want to stick.

hmmm try clearing one to see how it looks, rattle can can be tricky like that if not id say scuff them up and respray them medium-heavy wet. be careful of runs and clear them right away

Sideck, great job...very professional...now if I only had a spray gun lol

I think if I get a black srt-4, I may try to use the gold...and if it doesn't look right, I can always just sand it down and do it black...gotta be a little different

great job guys, keep the pictures coming!

For anyone who sand blasted them, what sized media or grit did you guys use in the sand blaster? I just don't want to pit the rims with too big media.

hey guys i painted my rims kinda like srt coastie. but i left the lip of the rim silver. well i sanded the whole rim with 120 grit. to get the paint of. it will look grey kinda in the sun they kinda look white. but i took all 4 rims off and i had a weekend to do it with. about 20 hrs. time. well i took the front two off and went to town with the 120 grit, just enough to get the silver paint of so you have a rough surface. then i sanded the rear wheels when i had a whole day also with 120 grit. then i got 400 grit sandpaper and wet sanded the rims as well to get some scratches out and make the scratches finer.
you can see in the pic here what i did. well when i got paint i bought 4 cans of duplicolor high gloss engine enamel. the 500 degree one. then i bought 2 cans of the silver duplicolor high performance wheel coating. and 3 cans of the duplicolor engine clear coat. also i bought painters tape the blue tape so its not so sticky. 1inch and 2' inch i first taped off the lip and the outside leaving the spokes to get painted first. as you can see here

after taping them off i put 3 coats of paint on the spokes. first one was not too heavy but a thick enough one to stick to the rim. and have some 400 grit to get rid of the orange peel effect. sand the paint a little not too much u might take it off. then it says on the can 10 minutes i waited about 15. then next coat a lighter coat to even out the rest of the paint. if you need to sand in between do as required. then after 2nd i applied a third medium coat. letting it dry. but i was doing coats with two rims at a time coat one. coat the other switching over. with the left over paint i sprayed any uneven spots like the inside of the spokes thats a bitch. and you will have something like this
after about 1 hour of the painting i wiped with a dry rag i dunno if it was dust or from the paint can. then i taped the other rims waiting for that 1 hour. and started applying clear coat. i did light medium light on the clear coat 3 coats. waiting 10 minutes for the clear coat. after the 3 coats wiped em down with another lint free rag and you have shiny rims!!
now the next part i emphasize after the clear coats wait like about 2 hours. so the paint and clear coat dry before taping them off for the silver. i waited 1 hr and the paint kinda smudged where i put the tape. i had to redo those parts. but now tape off the black painted part of the rims. and tape around the tires. this blue shit does not stick. so what i did was use smaller pieces to fit around the rim. and used a flat head screwdriver. to kinda wedge the tape between the tire and rim edge. just so it stays put and does not move around. after taping around the rim and spokes apply the silver. its reflective but i put clear coats on it too. but i did 1 good coat first time. then light and third medium. let them dry for a while like 20-30 minutes after the paint. wipe em of lightly with a lint free rag. then apply clear coat. light medium light same as the black part. then. let it dry like 15 minutes not too long then the paint sticks to the tape. not good. i left the tape on the rubber so i can clear coat 1 light one on the entire rim. let em dry about 1 hr after all that. i put them on the car, but i was working with a drop light cuz night fell. and a cop asked me why i was wearing a gas mask and working late at night. i got them on the car. and went to sleep. so about 8 or 10 hours later i drove. but it takes like 48 -72 hrs full cure time. i could tell some asshole touched em i think at the gas station and left a finger print plus it was 101.. but after about day 1/2 they were pretty much dry. ohh yea. late entry when you take off your wheels i broke off a stud i guess it was rusted out or put on wrong. so i had to put a new one on there. be carefull. and here is what i got as a final result
i hope this post helps you guys out. but i really thank srt coastie for the idea!
