How-To: Oil Catch Can & PCV Leak Stop Valve

This is a procedure to make a custom oil catch can and also install a check valve to prevent leaks through the pcv valve. Notice this check valve is very small, light and efficient.

Buy the following parts:

1. Home depot: HUSKY 1/4 In. Air Compressor Filter SKU 401910 (1 piece)
2. Grainger: Brass check valve item # 6D914 (1 piece)
3. female Fittings 90° Elbow 1/4 npt thread (1 piece)
4. Grainger: brass hose barb fitting 3/8 hose, 1/4 thread male, item # 4A488 (2 pieces)
5. 2 3/8 Hoses about 40 inch long, for oil and gas type.
6. something to secure connections (tie zips, etc).

PROCEDURE:

Notice: use teflon tape or something like that on all threads.
1.attach one barb fitting to the 90° elbow as shown:

2.attach the check valve to the other side of the 90° elbow, notice the arrow pointing towards the elbow.

3. Attach this to one side of the air filter, notice an arrow on top of the filter showing the direction of flow, this arrow must point towards the elbow and valve.

4. attach the other fitting barb to the other side of the air filter, and attach one of the hoses to it and secure it.

5. Attach the other hose to the opposite barb fitting and secure it.

6. unplug the rubber grommet between the pcv valve and the manifold pipeline, and attach the air filter side hose to pcv valve.

7. Attach the other hose from the check valve side to the manifold pipeline and secure it. Then, place it with zipties below the AC line.

Thatīs all!

maybe you put the check valve on the wrong side and there vas positive pressure inside the filter, i donīt have any trouble so far with the bottle of the filter because it only has vacuum.

How did you install it?

Mine leaked from the bottom as well. What I did was knocked out the barb thingy at the bottom and then plugged the hole with a bolt I had laying around and just for good measure I sealed the bolt with some high temp silicone gasket maker. Might sound ghetto but it worked. I have boost leak tested several times now with absolutely no leaking. The only thing I haven't figured out is how I a going to drain the filter when it starts to fill up..........

Sorry if this sounds dumb, but why is the check valve necessary? Isn't the PCV valve already a check valve of sorts? Wouldn't this just be redundant? Thanks.

Yes the PCV valve is a check valve but it does not close completely under WOT which creates a boost leak through the valve cover and into the intake. The check valve will close completely and no more boost leak.

Just a question, can't you just cap the intake manifold nipple off? Then just run a breather filter to the other side of the catch can instead of routing it back to your intake?
