HOW-TO: Hardwire Detector, LCD, Auto Dim Mirror, Etc

This is how you hardwire an accessory that you want to have switched power (on and off with the car)...This is for the positive connection:

Pull to remove fuse cover located at the Driverside, side of the dash

Remove the two phillip head screws (bad pic shows the top screw) holding the fuse block

With the screws removed, pull out the fuse block, there will about 10" of slack

Locate the BLACK wire with the WHITE stripe (it's at the top on fuse #3) Squeeze on a piggy back connection on it (mine already has it on).

For the negative(ground):
This will vary depending where you are installing your item...If you have a auto-dim rearview mirror, radar detector, or roof mount LCD, I recommend using a piggy back connection on the black wire that goes to your rearview mirror...

Where's the ground? It sounds like you are saying to hardwire a radar detector that normally plugs into a cigarette lighter to cut the end off the cig lighter, and use a tap in connector on the black and white wire (one wire black with white stripe or two wires black, and white?)? It won't work like that I don't think. A cigarette ligter has a ground and a hot power source. Explain a little more please. I think some people might start a fire if left with just this info...

Good point Wenzel, I edited...

Cfree...Are you asking in regards to the SRT4s wiring or the accessories wiring?

If in regards to the SRT4s, the whitestriped black wire is the positive...If you mean the accessory wiring, that's up to the accessory to provide the info...

I wired my radar detector in the line for the mirror lamps Just cut the end off the extra conecctior for the radar detector and slid the clip out of the back of the rearview miror. The used a little power meter I picked up at Sears to see which wire was hot and which was ground w/ the ignition on. Didn't have to splice any wires and it plugs right in wheer I have it mounted just below the mirror
Anyone who wnats more info or pic's of my radar detector install just pm me

Remove clip from rear passide opf mirror and put wires from detector in holes

This second one is the power tester I got a Sears for about 8 bux. You just clip the one end on a ground and then put the other on a wire Bingo piece of cake

Definately should be a sticky.

Boost n Juice- I just ordered the Escort Passport 8500 X50 in blue.. it has a seperate hardwire you can buy for like $30... can i just cut the end and do it myself? Its not a normal plug in, the end that goes into the detector is a phone jack looking style end.

What do you think? Here it is.. http://www.escortradar.com/x50.htm

Yes, I have the same setup...

The $30 is a smartcord hardwire kit, they also sell an non smart cord verison for $12ish shipped...With the smart cord, there is a small box in the middle of the wiring...That box has a blue always illuminated LED, an amber alert activated LED and a mute button...

Either verison is wired the same way...The telephone connection plugs into the detector and on the other side, there's a positive flathead (I think it's called) connection and a negative ring terminal...

For the positive, follow my instructions...The hardwire kits include a squeeze on piggy back (the blue thing in the last pic) that accepts the positive spade connection...For the negative, you can attach the ring terminal to the screw that hold the fuse block in place. (the screw in the 2nd picture)...

PM me with any questions...
