Default How-To: Adjust Shifter Crossover Cable

I still can't believe how much it improves shifting. If the bolt is off just a little it will make your shifting a lot more rough/notchy than it should be.

I'm sure most of you know about it already, but for those of you that dont here are the steps:

1. Remove center console. (2 screws in front cupholders, 4 screws in armrest)

2. Locate 8mm bolt on drivers side shifter cable.

3. Loosen bolt (don't remove), put shifter in 3rd gear, and where ever the bolt ends up (without you moving anything), tighten it.

4. Enjoy smoother shifting.

I've tried pretty much every position of the bolt on the cable, and the best position by far is the one where you don't move anything. Just put the shifter in 3rd gear (with the bolt loose) and tighten it where ever it ends up.

Here is a good pic of the bolt you loosen:

Should re-word it to unbolt the console and lift it up as this saves time and full removal is not needed in order to get it in 3rd gear and get to the adjustment bolt.

I still recommend taking it off completely. If you just lift it up, there is a possibility that it can hit the shifter as your tightening and you wont have the bolt tightened at the right point.

It's good just to have everything out of the way to make sure you get it tightened at the right point. Just a little off and the shifting will be rough.

Tons of people have done it.

Apparently the bolt can get set at the wrong point on the cable after all the shifting you do (hard, quick shifts make this happen quicker) so if you have never re-aligned it then there is a good chance it is not set in the correct spot.

I believe the srt-4 service manual has a couple pages showing you how to do this too, but I'm not positive.

It's very important to put it in 3rd gear and just tighten the bolt where ever it sits. If you move it just a little and then tighten it, your shifting will not be a smooth as it could be.

I guess you may be right, but I have gotten in the habit of doing this every so often since I found out about it. I do it so often now that I just get it up enough to get the nut driver on it and then let it down, put it in third gear and loosen and then re-tighten.

To the person asking about this. Its in the factory service manual to do this anytime the tranny is removed. Also supposed to adjust the torque struts if they are removed OR the tranny is removed as well (the effect is to properly pre-load the engine trans as an assembly)......again this is detailed in the service manual.

When I first got the car I couldn't downshift into 2nd gear maybe 80% of the time. I thought my tranny was done. I did a search and found out about the cable adjustment and every since I messed with it, I now CAN downshift into 2nd gear 100% of the time.

Lately I've just been messing with different positions to try and get the shifts as smooth as I can, and I've found that tightening the bolt where ever it ends up (without touching anything) after putting the shifter in 3rd gear is the best position.

I honestly believe this thing, as simple as it is, helps with shifting dramatically.

Wooohoo, I love it when people do all the hard work for me. My car shifts like dog shit, so I will certainly give this a try. I was going to order new tranny internals but we'll see...wanna give this a try first

How many miles do you have? If you've never done this before then most likely it is out of alignment. Most likely it won't completely fix your tranny (you make it sound like it's REALLY bad), but it should definitely help. I couldn't even downshift into 2nd gear before doing this, and now I can 100% of the time and it feels like a hot knife slicing into butter.

i didnt feel much of a difference, i even set it all the the back then to the front n the difference was minimal that i didnt know what was going to be best in the long run. so i just set it in third how it has been said always

Also do the torque mount pre-load adjustment if the shifter adjust did not help that much .............almost everyone has done "mounts" yet I would bet that 95% of the people have not tried this as well. When you read through the clutch or shifting issue trouble shooting sections in the service manual you will get pointed to both as well as manually bleeding the slave. If these do not help I would bet on the throw out bearing release lever needing to be replaced.
