Default Shifter Knob

Hey guys, my girlfriend got me a new shifter knob for my neon, and i cant figure out how the original one comes off! I was wondering if the whole stick has to be changed, or if the stupid thing just comes off. If anyone has any tips it would be appreciated.

Shift into 2nd gear as hard as you can and it will end up in the back seat. It happened to me at the track.
