Default Painting experts! I need your assistance!

I want to ask a question to anyone who is knowledgable in painting things. I just got my front driver fender destroyed by some freak who dont like me. And I bought a new fender that its color does not match my Black SRT-4. I was planning on sanding the whole thing down and giving it a new X8 Black paintjob. Now, How much paint do you guys think I should buy in order to paint JUST the new front driver fender?

Now heres what confuses me the most.
My friends tell me if im going to be sanding it down, im going to need Primer. Is this true?

Also will i need to put a clearcoat on the fender?

I know I need the basecoat because its the main paint.

So heres a summary to sum it all down.

-Do I need Primer if im going to be sanding down the whole fender?

-Do I need a clearcoat?

-How much paint do you guys think I need to JUST paint the front driver fender?

Thanks I appreciate the help.

Take it to a shop and have them spray it. If you really don't have that much knowledge about the subject then you probably shouldn't be doing it. Not trying to sound rude....

Yeah if you want it to come out looking good then pay a shop. It'll be worth the hassle.

If the fender has paint on it all you have to do is scuff it until the clear coat is gone and then paint, clear, and buff it.

If the fender is bare you have to prime, wetsand with 320, paint, clear, buff.

Either way if you don't know that much about the process you should let a shop do it. You have to know when to stop sanding, how it looks and feels, otherwise it will look like shit when you're done painting and you'll have to start all over again.

For just the fender, a pint of base color will do. Most new base/clear systems are a 1 to 1 reduction, so you really have a sprayable quart. As for the prep work, if the fender has ANY damage, stone chips or dents, the repair will need the be spot primed. If nothing wrong, the a simple red scotch pad will set you up for paint. Apply 2 to three coats of base, black always shows the scratches, so don't worry, they go away after the first coat of clear. Let the base dry for about 10 mins, or until its dull. Follow up with 2 coats of clear with a flashtime of 5 mins. Its not really hard to do, but the materials will prolly cost 60 to 80 bucks. for a 100 more a shop would be your EASIEST route. GOOD LUCK BSBOB

Around here (Kansas) a Shop will charge about 150-175 to prep and paint the fender.

But, the first thing you should do is find the asswad that F'd with your car and break his fingers, take whatever cash he has on him and tell him if he even looks at your car again you'll break the other 5 fingers.

Just my .02 cents
