Your best bet is to check with AAA and get an international drivers license. I'm not 100% on whats involved but when my mother visited she did this and had no issues.

marakka is right get with AAA and get your international drivers license. i think its like 40 bucks. its more of a souvenir than anything because they normally will laugh at your international drivers license and ask for your stateside license but beware the few that want you to have both. driving without a license here is a serious offense.

dont go on to any military bases.....international drivers license will not work...you will need to have a usaeur license....ponds guard will pull you to the side and call the mps. You will go to the pmo and depending on the mps be apprehended

As a tourist you DON'T need an international drivers license. BUT: It is very helpfull to have at least an official translation to get not in trouble with the police.
BUT2: English is not such a unknown language here. So if you wanna safe money - take your license. If you wanna be on the doublesafe side - get a translation or int. license.

Hmmm - i could ask a car rental here what they wanna see!!!

EDIT: Just asked car rentals here at the airport (sixt & hertz) - and they told me that you need passport, credit card and your drivers license.
No international license needed.
For the police it's the same: as long it looks like a drivers license, your photo is on it and the officer can see what kind of vehicles you are permitted to drive - everything is fine.

And if the police tries to fuck you: tell them that you wanna talk with their boss.

International license is for citizen of the states with such an alien language that noone can understand without 20 years school....
