So i attended my first autoX event this last weekend and it was a blast. Only had one problem. the course had one tight turn that almost everyone could make but me. This car just COULD NOT turn sharp enough to make the turn. I either had to take out a few cones, or stop, back up, and then go again.
So now to my question. I was looking on edmunds.com and seen that the regular neons have a 35.5 ft turning radius, while SRT's have a 41 ft radius. Thats a pretty good difference. Does anyone know why? Is it the rack and pinion? wheel spindles? And whatever the difference is, can it be swapped into our cars? Just wondering if anyone has any insight on this. thanks
From what I gather, you'd need to swap the whole front end to get the turning radius from the regular neon but, you'd lose the better brakes that the SRT has.
that doesnt change the fact that the srt transmission is wider
your right, but the holes for the tie-rods and i believe the lower ball joint? have a slightly different location (offset) to allow the clearence. NeonDan was working on the swap, but apparently he never finished it. Search the ACR rack swap and you will see what im talking about.
Could turning the SRT too sharp cause the axles to
be damaged easier ?, by putting too much strain on them with all the Hp we have.

The 03's have a better radius than the 04-05s. It has a lot to do with the shitty LSD we have. Its great for going fast in a straight line. Our neons are like every other American Muscle Car...they dont turn for shit. You want an autox car, buy something jap or euro.
By playing with the rear dampening and tire pressure, maybe throw in a stiffer sway, you should be able to get the car to rotate on throttle lift. I know it doesn't help on every turn, but every little bit helps.
Maybe somebody can confirm this, but I thought I remember reading somewhere that the srt-4 rack can turn more, but dodge put limiters on the rack itself to prevent tire rub because of the width of tires used. Allpar confirms that it is a PT GT Rack.
Not sure how hard it would be to remove the limiters on the rack, but if you were willing to deal with a rub (Or ran tires with enough offset) you might be able to get a little more steering angle out of it.
I certainly wouldn't be boosting while at maximum steering angles as it would be pretty hard on the cv joints.
