American Touring Car Championship Announced by USERA
DANVILLE, VA. (February 16, 2009) – It’s clear that the state of the economy has been front and center over the past few months. We are facing our most challenging period in decades, and just as the American public are looking to our country’s leaders for economic stability, motorsports teams are looking to the sanctioning bodies for signs that they understand the need lower the cost of preparing and racing cars. USERA is pleased to announce today a new series, the American Touring Car Championship (ATCC), with the primary goal of providing exciting touring car racing at an affordable cost for teams, drivers and sponsors.
Like our counterparts in Europe, the American Touring Car Championship will feature colorful pre-race grid formations with flag and banner presentations, hair raising standing starts and adrenaline inducing races. Teams will race under the flags of their home state and battle for overall Driver’s, Team and State Championships. Each of the six race weekends will include two sprint races so teams can minimize travel costs while maximizing exposure opportunities for their sponsors.
“The economy is on everyone’s mind right now. Teams are struggling to stretch their racing budgets and give their sponsors the best possible return on their investments,” said Ken Grammer, President of USERA. “The American Touring Car Championship will provide the excitement of European-style touring car racing at an affordable cost for our teams.”
The rules for the Championship have been written to allow cars built to existing stock classes (such as SCCA's Touring 3, Koni Challenge and limited prep FIA S2000 cars) to race in the new series with few changes. ATCC will have open tire, brake pad and shock rules which will permit the teams to develop key vendor support relationships.
The 2009 American Touring Car Championship schedule will be released soon. Teams and sponsors interested in learning more about the American Touring Car Championship may visit the USERA American Touring Car Championship web site at
