Who is going to try another year in their SRT4?

Hello,

My buddy should be getting his new Mustang GT PP in a week or two and he's pretty excited about getting into autocross with it. He wants me to co-drive and help him get a hang of the sport but he's not into the competitive side of it like I am. We were talking about doing Crows, Packwood and a bunch of local stuff next season.

While I'm not fully decided on what I would buy for a new car, if any, I'm excited about trying something new and different like this Mustang. For whatever reason the Ecoboost Mustang PP is at the top of my list but there has been no classing decisions or autocross results to look at to see that car's potential. So, I'll just have a good time in my friend's car for a while in F Street. F Street wheel and tire options are better at this time for the Ecoboost PP than the GT but I'm sure that will change real soon.

My ACR is currently half torn down for the steering rack replacement. Since the sub-frame was dropped for that I went ahead and pulled the transmission to do the clutch and rear main seal. All that was original OEM with 110k miles on them. My clutch fork was way worn out like most SRT-4s so I need a new one of those, too. This work will freshen the car up for whatever is its next chapter.

It's just sitting in the garage, ready to go! Got to figure out if I'm sticking with the 225/45-16s on my SSRs or try another combo.

The EcoBoost Mustang has also caught my eye. I traded in the Pacifica this year on a EcoBoost equipped Ford Edge and really like it.

Come on Mopar, give us something to Auto-X, or we will all leave the fold. Then there is my old '86 Shelby GLHS CSP car that I keep saying I'm going to get racing again!

Steve, how's the NYG ACR coming along?

Sweet Pea is doing great. I got it on the road way earlier this year and run it around every now and then. After nats I tried the 15" Rivals on it and holy cow, I couldn't go fast enough around my favorite practice corners around town. It would be a hoot to run it at an autocross.

The speedo quit on me and the problem is in the tranny. I can spin the speed sensor and get a reading on the dash so at some point I need to dig into that one of these days. Ugh. I also need to get a real exhaust on it and paint job. And proper intake, lol.

edit: My original Mopar Performance '95 PCM actually still worked and I merged it with newer style sensors from the '97 parts car I had. That was awesome because you can't get those PCMs anymore and it means I can use cheaper OBD-II style sensors that are more readily available. It is a quick little beast despite looking rough around the edges.

Hopefully, I haven't hijacked this thread too bad but here's my friend's new Mustang GT PP. Awesome car and will be a hoot to run next season.

Though it's not an srt, I have an 01 that I will probably run in HS again. Hopefully I will have an 04 srt but I won't know until the deal is done. It will have to be an SMS or SMF with it's mods. I saw the post about the 225 45 R15. Is that size any good? I got a chance to buy some unused Hankook Z214 cheap.

This thread has been a little slow.

Anyone sick of winter yet, and dreaming of chasing cones? I think I'll be going with Rivals in the 215/45-16 size. I did run R-comps in that size and liked it. I will still have the 225/45-16 Dunlop Direzza ZIIs (non star spec) as a back up plan. Oh ya, and a set of 225/45-16 Toyo R1Rs. Does anyone know if you can run the 140TW Toyo this year in street? I think Toyo admitted all they did was raise the number from 140 to 200. From the TireRack website "No changes were made to tire compound or construction, so both 140- and 200-Treadwear-rated tires are compatible with each other when put into service as singles, pairs or in combination."

I wonder what BFG has for plans for the Rival. Seems like everyone else is tweaking their tires, I'd expect BFG to have a similar plan for this year. Well the tire companies have until April 30 to show us what they got.

Rival is strongly rumored to have an S version before the tire deadline

"As the rumor mill has been well aware, BFGoodrich has been working on a second version of the g-Force Rival, currently known as the g-Force Rival-S. BFG hasn't officially announced the new tire to the world, but it’s existence has been discussed since just after Solo Nationals last fall.

The Rival-S is a separate tire from the current g-Force Rival which will continue to be available in its current form and size range.

As we wait for the official announcement on the Rival-S, Tire Rack has been given a preliminary list of sizes planned for production. Time will tell if all are produced, but we have no reason to think they won’t. As of today we don’t have any availability info, but we expect the Rival-S to make the April 30th Solo eligibility deadline. We can accept pre-orders via our phone sales team, and our web site will show the tire once we have more concrete availability information closer to the launch date.

G-Force Rival-S Preliminary Size List
P205/50R15 86W
P225/45R15 87W
P215/45R16 86W
P225/45R17 91W
P245/40R17 91W
P255/40R17 94W
P245/40R18 93W
P275/35R18 95W
P315/30R18 98W
P335/30R18 102W"

Bridgestone has a new tire. Also not sure how SCCA they will address the "140 TW but trust us it's 200 TW" R1Rs. Will be interesting this year with tire choice. I'm starting with my Hankook RS3V2s at Dixie Tour against a herd of Foci ST...

Going to give it one more year in GS and see how the class sorts out. But have my eye on the unknown 2015 GTI with performance pack...

Went the other direction

215/45-17s. With the short sidewall, I get good turn in and great grip at low pressures. Enough to trash an axle at Wilmington Tour last year...

I still like the gearing of the taller tires. On some of these faster tours, I still top out 2nd and ride the limiter. May try a 225/45-17 (but RS3V2s like a lot of wheel width) or even some of the 215/45-16s on my 16x7 SSRs depending on how the tire wars shape up. But I am sold on the 17s (about 16lbs each wheel)...

And I am not sold on Foci GS dominance yet. I was in 6 months of training the end of last year for a new career but I plan on hitting several tours and maybe a couple of pros and Nats this year. At least one full year of effort driving this year. Next year, may go the GTI route. I bought a low miles 2010 GTI 4 dr 6 speed for a daily driver and really enjoying it. May have to get a stage 1 tune. 60-70 extra horses for $500 for the street sounds too good to pass up!

So what are your tire plans this year? New Bridgestones, Z2 Star Spec, New Rival (and Rival S), may be new Yokohamas, RS3V2, or 200TW Toyo R1Rs? Lots of unknown tires that should do well, but on what surfaces with what ambient temps and will they go off with heat or get better?

#20 ·
One thing I need to consider is that for street tires, it really seems to be important to try to not stuff too much tire on a rim. So different than r comps where the stuff as much tire on the rim that you can approach worked. Is the 225/45-15 too wide for a 7 inch rim?

Next thing is I really would like a tire that can handle the heat that we demand the front tires can handle. My R1Rs and Z2s both didn't seem to like the heat. My best chances seemed to be to get a clean fast run up front. By the time it was hot in the afternoon, the tires just didn't seem to be in their comfort zone no matter how much watering you did. Maybe it's time to run different tires front and rear again. Tires that work well with heat up front and tires on the back that work better with little heat.

Next is rim size. I've got so many 16x7 sets of rims, this is almost my default. If I go 15x7s or 17x7s, I'll need to buy rims and tires. Since my car has always been strut clearance challenged, I really need to have a tire that's smaller in diameter than the 225/50-16s, as I'm running -3.0 degrees negative camber up front. Just a thanks to SCCA for the +/- 1 inch in diameter rule change. It's so much cheaper to run stock class now!!!

Too bad that most tire companies really don't want to lay down their cards yet (really don't blame them). So far I'm thinking that the BFG Rival S will be my choice. BFG always seems to bring a winning tire to the game (if they want to) and I think that is why the S was developed. But who knows what this years hot tire will be!

At least up north here, it won't get warm until June so I have some time to let others do some tire testing before the snow melts.

Hello,

If you remember last year I tried 205s and 225s on the 15" wheels and while I felt the 205s had a sharper response they just couldn't hold up to the load. The sidewalls got hammered. 225s supported the car better so I stuck with those. If there was a stronger 205 it might work out or maybe the 215 is the better ticket.

I should finally get my car back together today after the steering rack failure last fall. I got the new rack yesterday and have already done rear main seal, axle seals, clutch and clutch pivot fork. The fork that came out of my car was badly worn out.

I'm anxious to get my car back on its wheels but it will see limited duty from here on out. My first event in the 2015 Mustang GT is tomorrow. It has been fun helping my friend get it broken in and messing with alignment and whatnot. The car is a beast and I can't wait to autox and track it!

Still thinking about which size tire to run on the ACR. Did I miss a size?

Yes. All were on RS3V2s. Mine had over 100 runs and probably were not 100%. The winning Focus had nearly new ones in the front. My co-driver and I had trouble putting down power off the line and out of corners. After watching the cars on RE71Rs, I am convinced that they may be a little better. And the reading about the Rival S testing last year at Lincoln may show their new tire is as good or better than the RE71Rs. So I am holding out to see which tire may be better. Also, since their sidewalls are stiffer, I would be able to run 225/45-17 or even possibly 245/40-17. Even thought about getting staggered 245/40-17 and 225/45-17 tires and swapping sizes from front to back to see which works best in front. But the Focus are running 255s on their cars, and I am convinced that the SRT4 needs more tire up front for more bite to stay competitive. Stay tuned...

So are FoST running 255/40-17s on 17x8s? Clay, have they been running that on all four corners? No wonder your thinking of putting 245/40-17 on 17x7s.

Which 17in rims did you end up getting, how much did they weigh, and what offset do they have? I've been looking at 17x7s and haven't found anything I'm happy with yet.

I am using a set of discontinued Konig daylite wheels that are 40mm offset and about 16 lbs each. I found a set of KTP wheels (??) that are around 18lbs each in the same size last week for $200 used that I will use for a second set. I will wait a couple of weeks and see how the Rival S (Comes out 4/1) stacks up with the RE71R and then pull the plug on purchase. May still buy staggered sizes. Also may but some 225/50-16s to go on my 16x7 SSRs.

This is the best new wheel I have found

Can you use the 40 offset without a 1/4 inch spacer? I had been searching for 33-35 offset rims.

I'm just going to start the season with my 16x7 SSRs and 225/45-16 ZIIs which should work OK, because it's pretty cold still. It has snowed on Mother's Day up here and caused us to cancel events.

Looking for the 17x7s and also thinking RE-71s or Rival-S are going to be THE tire of the year.
