Hey, I have a set of slicks on the way and always have in the back of my mind purchasing tubes for the safety concern. But out of the 30+ FWD slick cars I see at the track on a given night not one of them run tubes? Is it really required for safety, or should you use them once you are over a certain trap speed or somethin?
I have had a tire go out on the HWY ay 120kmph and it was not bad at all. Are you guys going off experience or what M&H and M/T say on their sites.
1. m/t and M&H want to make $$ buy sellgin tubes
2. these tubes are ment for drag wheels only and will not fit with out mods
3. drilling aluminum or steel wheels will cause more of a safety issue then not running tubes
4. when a FWD car launches it takes the weight off the drive wheels greatly reducing stress. with a RWD car nearly 3000lbs of weight rest solely on the rear tires thus requiring tubes for safety
5. A slick will not just blow out unless there is debris on the track and in this case a slick is thin and the debris will not only cut the tire but it will!! cut the tube too.
6. if the tire ever spins on the rim witch happens sometimes when you are not running beadlock the tube will rip appart and will require a tire shop to install a new tube where as with no tube the tire slips and a. it wont go flat or b. all you have to do is fill it with air again.
7. these things are $100can each and weigh 6lbs each
All this info is hard facts from a guy that owns a tire shop and has two drag cars him self that run quite a bit faster then the srt's on this site his camaro ran a 8.28 this past weekend and his nova runs in to the 7's oh and he dosnt run tubes either. He sells more M/T slicks in Ontario then any other dealer and sells tones to FWD drag cars I know two guys with civics that run mid to low 10's and they also do not run tubes.
forgot to say on a 15'' rim the valve stem if put in the center of the rim will hit the caliper or rub on the disc's you would actually have to dril the holes with the rim on the car and even then the hole will not be in the center and if the tube is twisted inside the rim it will fail.
I have tubes, but not installed, I got them just like you said for safety, but the shop was going to have to do surgery on my Kosie K-1's for them to fit. 1) the tubes have like a serious 13" ID, they had to go through hell and back to get them on. 2) like said before you have to drill out the rim. So yeah if anyone wants to buy 2 slicks (one still in package) PM me.

I have Kosie K-1's and just put my 26 inch slicks on w/ tubes. The valve stem doesn't go completely through the hole, but more than far enough for me to screw the valve cap on. Is this safe or should I take the tubes out? Anyone running a similar set-up?
