Default Need a fire jacket??

Section 1-A, located on page 24 of the 2006 NHRA Rulebook read as follows:
10.00 (*6.40 1/8 mile) and slower; all E.T. non-OEM supercharged, non-OEM turbocharged, or nitrous-equipped cars with an OEM or .024-inch steel firewall: Jacket meeting SFI Spec 3.2A/1 mandatory

The tech at Speedworld brought this up on Saturday. Are all of us with big turbos going to need fire jackets this year?

Yeah thats the rule. If you run an aftermarket turbo in any vehicle you need a fire jacket. They enforce that rule Englishtown. I just always say im stock turbo and they never look under my hood.

it only applies to those cars that went turbo aftermarket not to those that came with it from the factory weither its still the factory one or not. its about if it did or didnt come from the factory with a turbo.

We were told at our local track last year that any car running under 12.5 was going to need a fire jacket! I went ahead and got one just in case!

Has the IHRA adopted this rule too, or is it just NHRA?

What it's going to come down to is your how your local track interprets and enforces the rule.

If you spent thousands of dollars on your car (i.e. Big Turbo upgrade + supporting mods), is buying a $75-90 Jacket going to really hurt ya?

At Englishtown NJ you can by the jacket at the souvenir shop. In NJ at Englishtown this rule was implemented/enforced two years ago at tech inspection and I did not pass and get an ok to run till I came back with the new jacket in hand. Upgraded from stock or any power adder dictated a fire jacket..........IMO not a bad rule.

Since its coming up on two years since being at the tack what else has been changed? I see Nemo/Rage-Tek is selling scatter shields, is this a requirement now for running at or below a certain time? Are you now required to have an engine diaper if running at or under a certain time?

My understanding was faster than 11.50 required the addition of a fire jacket, along with a scatter-shield and 5/6 point bar. This was because many OEM cars like the Viper and Z06 Corvette run faster than 12.5 STOCK and they didn't want to discourage owners of these cars from running at the track or installing safety equipment in daily drivers.

That can't be correct because a friend of mine has 12.1 second '07 CLS-6.3 AMG and while he's required to run a driveshaft loop for slicks (was imformed at Sac one day) he's only required to wear a helmet and his traps are well above 115mph.

If your local track makes you ahere to the old rule, then oh well, but these have been updated and even a 11.77 EVO next to me didn't have a jacket or cage just a helmet at Pomona NHRA finals.
