1/8 mile Street tire tips? Kason, chrishna, anyone...
So I have decided to start learning how to drive the car on the track instead of messing around on the street. I went down to our local 1/8 mile track Wednesday for test n tune so I could get some practice under my belt. It was quite a bit trickier than I imagined.
You guys that are pulling off some kick ass 1/8 mile times on street tires, how are you guys getting off the line? I was trying to launch around ~3300-3500rpm with a quick slip of the clutch. It usually resulted in a bog or just spin. My times seemed to be around the same either way (crappy lol). I know my 60's need work but I don't know which way to go with it as far as launch rpm and technique goes. I am getting worse 60's with this turbo than I did the few times I ran the stock turbo at the track lol.
I tried lowering the launch RPM, but it seems I would bog worse. Maybe I was letting off of the clutch to quick, it's pretty grippy. I do have quite a bit more lag than a stock turbo though. Oh and I don't WOT shift the car.
I guess it's worth mentioning the setup. Just on 93 octane so it's nothing crazy:
- FP Green Stage 3 (47lb/min)
- 3" O2 housing
- 3" Thermal Exhaust w/catless DP
- Turbonetics Billet MBC - set @ 22/23 psi
- S2 PCM w/ 3bar sensors
- AEM Cold air intake
- SCT xcal2 w/AGP flash
- DW 750cc
- Walbro 255
- PTP direct fit FMIC
- ACT DN4-XTSS
The three passes I got in:
Run 1)
60' - 2.3810
330' - 6.1119
594' - 8.5402
ET - 9.0590
MPH - 86.74
Run 2)
60' - 2.3032
330' - 6.0962
594' - 8.5202
ET - 9.0371
MPH - 87.05
Run 3)
60' - 2.3310
330' - 6.3049
594' - 8.7340
ET - 9.2488
MPH - 87.41
you said no, but wot shifting well help alot. the 60fts suck, but fwiw, you are nearly a mirror image of what i was running the 1/8th with my s20g on all season uhp street tires before i learned to launch. it really just takes a few dozen launches. practice makes perfect. with a good 2.0 60 you will be deep into the 8's. The tires you're driving on really matters too. You must realize that 'street tire' can mean anything from hankook k104 to rt615 to m&h dot cheaters. get yourself some tires that have a AA traction and a sub 300 treadwear. that should help. also, contrary to popular belief, airing down street tires will NOT help your trap speed and et's.
i say get some m/t a wot box and call it a day youll be doin 7 's for sure !!! other than...... it would waste of time going to the track on a s3 and street tires !!!! LOL
Go around the water
Quick spin of the tires to get the debre off
Get both lights on
Pull the e-brake up
Put it in first
Rev to 24/2500 rpms
When you get the third yellow drop the e-brake
And then Slip the clutch while giving it as much gas as possible WITHOUT spinning. I also feather 2nd somewhat too. Also WOT shift into 3rd and 4th shifting at redline.
It takes practice..lots of it But I did cut a 2.061 60ft on 18 inch wheels and tires(shitty tires) doing so
And have ran a best of 8.19 at 97.90mph in the 1/8 so far doing it. It really just depends on track prep.

Kason have you tried the tire stick on street tires? I'm sure that would help a bit, although it is cheating a bit. I think a lot of tracks don't allow that stuff either.

Hey, hearing that gives me some hope lol! What kind of times do you run now? I just took my 18" wheels and tires off last weekend. I was on stock wheels and kumho asx all seasons at the track. So I definitely could upgrade in the stickier tire department. I have thought about getting some different wheels next spring with some more performance oriented tires on them.
The only reason I let air out of my tires is it combats wheel hop. That is the only reason I ever do it. I am still running stock MM (I have inserts sitting in my garage, just hesitant to put them in) so I drop some pressure to keep it from hopping.

Yeah your short times are sick on your setup. Sounds like I need to maybe use a lower RPM when I am launching? I guess you ride the clutch a little while your launching?
As far as WOT shifting goes, I am just hesitant to do it. Mainly because I am not confident that I can cleanly shift that fast in order to do it right.
Do you run stock MM's on your car?
How do you fight against wheel hop?

I have stock everything but springs of course. I didn'[t care to add vibrations to the car since I drive it ALOT. I get wheel hop very and I mean very rarely. If it does happen I just let out and try again next run. still on stock axles also. those things are tough!

And who needs new axles WHEN you do not break your stock ones?? If your wanting to sell something do it in the right section. He asked for tips not "where to get new axles" Thanks!
I think that's probably the best idea. I was trying to pedal through 2nd gear but I think I was getting a little too crazy in first gear. I am taking all the considerations in this thread into account. I am thinking about going back Wednesday night if weather permits. I definitely need more practice!
