Default Viper SRT-10 is hurt!!!

My friend's Viper is hurt on her heart.

Saturday evening, my friend was on the road testing her top speed with his new differential assembly with 3.73:1 gear set and new aluminum flywheel.

The top speed of her was 305km/h (190.6 mph)

After that run, when he was driving her... everything looked normal.

Next day, she woke up with a noise increasing beyond 3000 rpms.

He followed my advised to take her to the dealer and guess was..

Cylinder #3 was not cutting when the spark plug wire was removed.

After ansiously waiting for Daimler-Chrysler to give their judgment, a specialized tech from theirs was going to come to our dodge dealer to see what the problem was and verify it. Finally, they gave up on that idea and gave authorization to the dealer to go and open the engine....

Guess what....

Cilynder #3 had a spun rod bearing!!!

Car has only 2500 miles

What has amazed us the most, it's the fact they will NOT replace the engine, but instead, they authorized the dealer to fix it!

A new set of metals was authorized
A new complete piston (with rod) was also authorized
Finally, a new crankshaft also was authorized.

What do you think guys? Do you think it will be ok again or it will be giving problems on the future?

My friend is kind of dissapointed as he has always owned modified Corvettes and never had a problem like this

On saturday I will go there and take some pics of her all open.

My guess is that regardless of whether the engine is fixed or replaced, he'll continue to have issues if he drives 190mph with 3.73 gears.

Anyway - that's too bad about the engine. I guess the positive side is that once it's fixed, the numbers will match and he can unload it on some poor unsuspecting person.

Sorry, my bad, currently he has 3.55 gears. The 3.73 are on order.

At 190mph he was at 6100 rpms on 5th gear but he didn't last much on it when he change it to 6th gear, the top speed did not increased neither rpms which stayed at 4100 aprox.

But still we are having issues to get this warranty going.

Tomorrow I'll take the pics for you to review.

It will still be under warranty when the next failure happens. I don't understand why service departments think metal in the engine will just go away.

29 Outlaw, Which mods do you recommend for the Viper (my friend is asking) and where would be a good place to buy them?

He want to get better times on the 1/4 mille.

He already has

Mopar Performance:
PCM
Flywheel
3" exhaust system
STS
Headers Belanger
DANA 3.55
Underdrive pulley

We have on back order the mopar performance cam (4 are already on the list )

ok if they are replacing the #3 rod and piston theres nothing to worry about there, and a new crank theres nothing to worry about there either b/c there had to be something wrong w/ the rod bearing or crank journal to mess that particular rod bearing up, or it may have been oil starvation to number 3 theres no way to know, but im sure that going 190 turning that kinda RPM's for a period of time will take its toll on anything no matter how well its built.

hell those motors are like the 4.6dohc motors they put in fords, they are hand built and anything can happen, human error. i wouldnt complain if its still under warantee

It's not the service depots choice to replace just the parts or engine assembly, Dodge makes that call. If the block is not damaged then it's going to get repaired. If a crank main bearing spun then the block would have been junk.

Damn! Where do you guys get to run 190mph on the street? Hate to have anything go *kaboom* on the car when you're up that fast.

Good luck with the Viper btw! I love 'em... had a '97 C5 Corvette a few years ago (had to get rid of it due to new baby) and the next time I am in the market for a 2 seater I'm seriously thinking of one.

Hope they fix that snake!

Stupid??? I think you have not idea of how it feels going that fast to say so....

Remember this... It's a Viper and he ain't gonna drive it like a grandma... and I would do the same.

And no, he was no racing nobody....

BTW if a Viper being a 10 cyl engine 100% stock.... Guess what would had happend to the SRT-4 to keep it up at that speed?

It's not the confusion between KMH and MPH, it was the time I wrote it it was late and I was sleepy.

Thanks

It was not on the street but on the road. We live in a very desert area where we have very long and straight roads that permits it.

My friend has no worries about transportation. He has a 04 Explorer, 05 Escalade and many others... His dad was owner of Coca Cola franchise for almost 50 year and they just lost it about 2 years ago, however, they still sell another soda of their own brand.

I wish I was him...

We are pushing real hard to get that snake on the road again.
