Our owner's manual states to use a synthetic oil, such as Mobil 1, for oil if we are perfoming spirited driving. Having this said, your car has a factory fill of M1, correct? What is the recommended change interval that Dodge states? I hope it doesn't say every 3,000 miles because it would be such a waste if it did say that. Synthetic can EASILY last 5,000 if not 6,000 miles.
amsoil will last a long time. i go 10,000+ on my oil changes. and every time i do change it, its uber clean

Yeah, used that before. Just hard to get and expensive. Actually, Amsoil only recommends going 3x the recommended change interval of the manual for a turbo car. Which = 9,000 miles. At least they used to say that when I was using it. Do they still say that? What weight oil are you using? I heard the 0W-30 is the shiot for a turbo car.

SRT4 owners manual and on the oil fill cap says 5w-20 WT..most SRT4 owners use 5w-30 or 0w-40 wt. I use the 5w-30 and engine performs well. I would say in using 100% full synthetic oil that a 5-6k oil change would be fine but if car is used in dusty conditions, than drop that too 4-5k.
5W-20??? Where do you see that? I've never read that anywhere....
The 5w20 is on the OEM oil cap that came on my new 2005 SRT4, yes it says 5w20wt, so does my 2005 Ram Hemi.. I use 5w-30 wt instead. How bout this... on a Durango Hemi 2005 the oil cap says 5w-30 wt, so why should my truck have too use 5w-20? Go figure??
You did not state what year your viper is but your manual will tell you what weight to use. And use Mobil 1 oil or a synthetic of your choice. Filter is your choice although many run the factory Mopar or a Mobil 1 filter.
Most Viper owners change oil every 3K because either they track them (if tracked most change every outing) or put less than 3K miles per year. You can buy 10qts of oil at walmart for $44 and a good filter for $10. $54 per oil change is cheap. Don't skimp on the oil changes.
Pay attention to the recommendations for tranny/diff as well.
Go to the VCA website and search for service recomendations, you will get all the info you need.
Have you purchased the power steering overflow vent yet? If not get it. Roe Racing sells them cheap. If you don't have the full service manuals buy them on ebay.
Also if you have not gone to smooth tubes and KN do so as well. Pretty cheap HP gain.

Not sure if you have an SRT-4 or a Viper, but I checked both my oil cap and the manual and they both say to use 5W-30. Dont know where you are getting 5W-20 from. I thought only Honda used that.

most durangos have MDS and if you use a different weight they set a code and the ck engine light comes on assuming its a 5.7 hemi
They changed the recommended oil to 0-40W in 2005 for Vipers, and they used 5-30W in the past. I would say it would be wise to change the oil at least every 3,000 miles, as you have a $16,000 aluminum motor in your beast, most are driven hard and frankly it is cheap insurance. I would not recommend every 5-6,000 miles, as it would likely take to long time wise, and this protection is relatively cheap considering the price of the machine. You will need 11 quarts for a 2003 or newer, and give us a call as there is now a specific Viper oil filter and it really is worth the tiny bit extra ( most Dealers can't find it or know nothing about it ).
Sincerely,
Bill Pemberton
Ask for Mark Jorgensen , Viper Performance Coodinator, for info on the filter or anything else.
