Default Tire question

Whats a self sealing tire? From what I read it comes on the 300C. Is it like the same tire thats on the corvette where if it gets a nail in it you can sill drive on it?

it is just what it sounds like the tire has a goop in it that seals any holes thus self sealing any holes in the tire. Also note that they are not included they are part of an option package on the c.

As for what the corvette has i dunno, It probably has run flat tires like hummers (the real hunmmers not the H2's (a tahoe in disguise)) Run flats are totally different from self seling tires

Thanks CEO for the info but im still not that clear. You are right the vette has run flat tires. But what's the advantage of a self seal tire over a regular tire? I mean does it last longer? Do it seal its self if it gets punctured? If a nail gets in does it do something better than a what a regular tire would? Thanks

there is a goop solution in the tire, when a hole is made the goop cloggs. So in a normal tire where the air would slowly escape in these as the air starts leaking the pressure pushes the goop into the hole and seals the leak. this will not work though with major gouges like a knife slash.

I hope that helps because i cannot be any more descriptive than this, if you need a better description go to continental tires web site they make the tires for the 300.

A run-flat is a tire that can operate with no air pressure. The sidewalls are extra stiff. A run-flat and a self sealing tire are not the same. If you pickup a nail in the selfing-sealing tire the liquipd goo is supposed to seal it.

Ok not to kill this subject to death but I read an article and this is how they described the self sealing tire. " Self-Sealing Tires: A special sealant in the inner liner of the tires fills punctures up to 0.19 inches to minimize the loss of air pressure and significantly reduce the probability of a roadside stop due to a flat tire "

This pretty much says what was said before but in a different way. Thought I would add this just in case anyone else had difficulty understanding the tire. Thanks again for all the people who responded

I was aware of this concept years ago. I ride Mountain Bikes and there are tires and tubes availble with goo inside to seal punctures.

Also, you would not find a run-flat on a tall side wall tire like the ones coming on Magnums and 300's. They will have a 60-series (225/60/18) tire with a huge azz side wall (for comfort) and a run-flat usaully is found on tires with much lower sidewalls like 30, 35, 40 or 45 series tires.
