(DetNews) New Dodge Dakota will be built on carryover platform
Originally, Dodge had planned to share a new mid-size truck platform with the new Durango sport-utility vehicle and the Dakota pickup, but scrapped those plans when the chassis was deemed too large and expensive for the latter.
Instead, the 2005 Dakota is being heavily revised, but built on a mostly carryover version of the existing platform. It is expected to debut in early summer 2004, and will continue to be assembled at the Dodge City complex in Warren.
Suppliers report that Mitsubishi, a member of the DaimlerChrysler AG global alliance, may get a version of the new Dakota in 2005 or 2006. If approved, this variant would likely get only slightly different styling -- primarily new front-end sheet metal, with Mitsubishi family design cues that could tie it to the Endeavor.
