I was getting in the truck one morning and it started with no problem. As soon as a put the truck in reverse, it stalled and I tried to start it again with no luck. If I remember correctly, there was a faint electrical smell that was noticable for a few seconds then went away.
When I took a look under the hood and at the fuel pump relay socket, some of the plactic surrounding one of the connecters was burnt. However, I really didn't think that it was a electrical problem because the fuel pump is priming when I turn the key.
I played with it a liitle more and tried to start it with the fuel pump relay out of the socket and the truck started for a few seconds then quit running again. So, I started it again with the fuel pump relay not installed and had a friend standing by to plug the relay in when the truck started again. Well, the truck started again and my buddy put the relay back in and I hit the gas and it continued to run. However, I had to keep my foot on the throttle to keep it from stalling and it smelled like it was running really rich. It sounded like it wasn't running on all the cylinders and was backfiring every few seconds.
Has anyone experienced this problem with their Dakota or another car. I find it very strange that it would start without the pump relay in the socket??
Any ideas... Thanks,
Brandon
its hard to fix that without looking at it. but obviously you have a short going on there ,check your fuses ,grounds, and wires ,a wire could be rubbing on bare metal somewhere, with the insulation cracked or broken away. not seeing it first hand thats the best i can do, but thats where i would start. best of luck !!! hemihunter
