Default noob with a question

I own a D40 but dont know much... As far as the #'s go on the lens, the lower # the aperture is open less, right? The higher #'s is letting more light in? So you have to compensate with the exposure settings?

*for example the lens posted in the previous post says 1:3.5-5.6*

The smaller the f/stop #, the more light & focusing. Vice verse for the larger F/stop #

the lower the #, the MORE it opens ... the higher the number the less it opens

try using an aperture priority (might be S mode for a d40) ... you pick the aperture, camera picks the exposure

"A" for aperture & "V" for priority ... then "T" for shutter" and "V" for priority
