Default Hard drive?

Computer crashed awhile back (don't have time to post specs right now, but will in the morning) and I'm looking into buying a new hard drive.

It starts to boot, you can hear it warm up and then tick, then repeat.
I assume it's the hard drive.

Now I'm looking into buying a new one so I can get my personal pc back up and running and I want a decent hard drive, not one that's going to be junk.

So what's the word on reputable hard drives?

HP Pavilion a808x
AMD Athlon 64. 2.2GHz
512 ddr sdram
Integrated sis mirage2 128mb shared memory
1600mhz system bus

I wanna get plenty of memory and a dual screen setup.
I'd like to play games like fallout, aoe, etc without too much lag as well.

Ideas?

The faster the RPM of the drive the less read latency you get when data is read from the disk. The difference between a 10k drive and a 5k drive is huge. Makes the biggest difference when loading games but will also have an effect while playing, especially since your low on RAM, and while were on the subject, god damn, go get some ram! It's far too cheap and easy to install to be running on 512. In any case, with your system a 7200 RPM drive should be more than enough. The cache on the drive is a bucket of data that is stored, similarly to RAM so that if there is data that is being swapped out frequently the hard drive can output from there so that it can avoid having to read from the disk and being forced to endure latency.

Lol. The computer has been down for awhile, I've just been too cheap to do anything with it.

Thanks for helping out. Anything I should know about ram?

You'll be fine with a 7200RPM hard drive. As for your RAM, make sure you buy the same RAM as you currently have (SD/DDR RAM). Also, check inside your computer to ensure that you have an extra RAM slot available.

I'm a little late on this one but it's not just the same type of RAM but also the same RAM speed in hz.

As in if there is an extra slot, get ram in the same hz as previous slotted ram?
