A full marathon, talking the full 26 miler here, none of that half stuff, or relay crap.
I have run one, and attempted another.
While in Iraq we had a relay team ready to run the Boston Marathon at Tallil (4 members, each runs about 5.5 miles or so) and two of the relay members got stuck at another base for several days and weren't going to make it back, and we found out the night before so it was too late to get anyone new to want to do it.
So me and the other guy decided that we would just run the full marathon, and see how far we got.
Yah...
19 miles in I thought I was going to die, but I kept going...
22 miles in I fell down cramped up so hard it took 5 minutes to get the cramp out and get going again.
24 miles I could no longer run continuously and had to alternate hobbling slow jogging for the last 2+ miles.
I can remember over the last mile thinking "WHAT THE *@#*$@ WERE YOU THINKING??? YOU WILL NEVER DO THIS AGAIN!!!"
I finished, took me 4 hours and 40 minutes, not bad for never having trained. All I did was my usual 4 mile runs every other day, but I think all the walking we did in Iraq must have also helped because I attempted another marathon last year here in the U.S. and I had to finish at the half because my ankle was acting up, I didn't train like I probably should have.
This year I'm not going to try, but once I get my weight back down to 180 I'm going to work my way up the distance to 20 miles for practice runs and a year from now give it another shot.
Anyone else every try a marathon?

I just didn't understand it. All you guys did was RUN. Thats it!
There was no ball involved or leaping over something or anything.
just RUN!
There is a real mental element to distance running, and by mental I mean that you have to really use mind over matter to push yourself beyond where your body thinks you should be able to go, and also mental as in, a bit crazy

yeah i got ya.
But still when i played soccer,we hated the days where all we did was run and not play ball..
we would look @ the cross country ppl and think "damn that sucks...thats all they get to do..RUN!" lol.
I never have, but I want to. I want to see if I can make it the whole way.
The only training I would do is the cardio I do every day. 4-5 days a week I'm on the treadmill for 30-35 minutes and the other 2-3 days I run 5 miles outside.
It takes me about 40 minutes to run the 5 miles...don't know how long I could keep that pace up. I'm not dying at 5 miles so I wonder just how far I could go.
