Default So what have you heard regarding diet sodas...?

Just curious what's in the news lately regarding this... I drink like 2 litres a day at least... Ya, I know this - that can't be good.

diet soda is much worse for you than regular soda. Higher sodium content and the artificial sweetener in it is pretty much poison. look up aspartame. Your weight loss might not be affected, but your health will be. Have fun with that.

*LMAO*@ these responses.

Aspartame has not been linked to any study's that show it produces tumor growth or cancer cells. I had these same questions a few months back about how aspartame metabolizes iin the body. While I wouldn't drink 2 liters a day.... I do drink 1-2, sometimes 3 diet cokes a day. There was an artificial sweetener back in the 60's that was found to cause cancer and commonly aspartame gets linked to that.

Thanks for your responses, but I'm still not totally convinced it's bad - please chime in here. I just took some quotes from Wikipedia. I'm not standing up for Aspartame, just wan't some facts either way. Good day to ya.

Quote 1 from Wiki:

Based on government research reviews and recommendations from advisory bodies such as the European Commission’s Scientific Committee on Food and the Joint FAO/WHO Expert Committee on Food Additives, aspartame has been found to be safe for human consumption by more than ninety countries worldwide. In 1999, FDA officials described the safety of aspartame as "clear cut" and stated that the product is "one of the most thoroughly tested and studied food additives the agency has ever approved.

Quote 2 from Wiki:

Some scientific studies, combined with allegations of conflicts of interest in the sweetener's FDA approval process, have been the focus of vocal activism, conspiracy theories and hoaxes regarding postulated risks of aspartame.

Quote 3 from Wiki:

In 2006, the US National Cancer Institute concluded in a study of over 470,000 men and women aged 50 to 69 that there was no statistically significant link between aspartame consumption and leukemias, lymphomas or brain tumors.

Quote 4 from Wiki:

A 12 ounce can of diet soda contains 180 mg of aspartame,[43] and one liter of aspartame-sweetened soda contains 600 mg aspartame.[44] U.S. diet beverage consumers average approximately 200 mg of daily aspartame consumption.[43] For a 75 kilograms (165 lb) adult, it takes approximately 21 cans of diet soda to consume the 3,750 mg of aspartame that would surpass the the FDA's 50 mg/kg ADI of aspartame.[43] Surveys of aspartame intake, particularly via diet soda, indicate that even consumers with high aspartame intake are typically "well below" the EFSA's 40 mg/kg ADI.[45][46][47] The European Commission’s Scientific Committee on Food concluded in 2002 that, while some minor effects on health may occur at very high doses, no effects are expected at normal levels of consumption

Quote 5 from Wiki:

An elaborate hoax disseminated through the internet attributes deleterious medical effects to aspartame. This conspiracy theory claims that the FDA approval process of aspartame was tainted and cites as its source an email based upon a supposed talk by a "Nancy Markle" at a "World Environmental Conference."Specifically, the hoax websites allege that aspartame is responsible for multiple sclerosis, systemic lupus, and methanol toxicity, causing "blindness, spasms, shooting pains, seizures, headaches, depression, anxiety, memory loss, birth defects" and death.

I never believe anything on Wiki. Its a good basis to start your search for information though. I used it when I was looking for effects of aspartame. Thats where I found the other sweetener that was outlawed in the 60's.

You have to do a hell of a lot of research to understand why you shouldn't trust the FDA, ADA, etc... so I won't go there because you wouldn't believe me or do the research yourselves anyways...

But one thing is for sure, do not trust Monsanto - the company that owns the artificial sweetener. Monsanto is poisoning the world through genetically modified plants and animals as well... their g.m. feed has been proven to sterilize animals that it feeds, as well as other unknown consequences... what happens when we eat these animals?

Monsanto, just like every other major international corporation, is in bed with our government. Don't trust the FDA to say that aspartame is safe... stay away from diet sodas.

If you are interested in actually finding out about aspartame, learn a bit about monsanto by watching this documentary on the company. It is well worth your time.

You can find information on aspartame with a simple google search so I won't do that for you... if you are any good with doing research you will look at the third party websites for links to substantiated information that isn't going to be plastered all over the FDA website, rather than going straight to a government site to read what they tell you to think about it like everyone else does.

Also look up these chemicals: 50% phenylalanine, 40%
asparatic acid, and 10% methyl alcohol <-methanol

This is a really interesting topic. I think i'll do some research on this myself, seeing as I do consume a fair amount of diet drinks.

I used to drink quite a lot of diet soda, but now I have MAYBE 1-2 a day, when I drink them. I'll go several days just drinking water and milk, or whatever.

At some point, though, it gets tiring when EVERYTHING is linked to some sort of conspiracy.

Believe what you want. I guess I've got a bit more faith in our government than most. While I've seen what Monsanto is capable of first hand.... My aunt owns property that borders a property Monsanto purchased for a hazardous waste site.... I don't see the correlation between them being a shitty company and making a product that could potentially kill consumers.

Aspartame is also used in regular drinks as well. Don't think its only in diet sodas.

i do believe that if you drink 1 or 2 a day, it's not bad. it actually falls into the whole "drink 8 cups of water a day" thing. anything beyond that would just probably be bad for your teeth.
