Default White noise

So I purchased JBL front and rear speakers and hooked em up to a JBL 4 channel amp. Ran new speaker wires to all 4 with proper ends. I get a noticeable amount of white-noise. I can reduce it if I tinker with the gain and lower it below my input voltage but it's still there. I checked my input RCA cables, they are good.

could i be picking up noise from my wiring harness.

Not sure. JBL stuff is pretty well known to be nasty stuff to work with. They usually do not have good filters like higher end units do. Try to turn the gains up on the amp and unhook the rca's. If you have noise then play with the power/grounds on the amp. If not, you may need to rerun the power or grounds on the headunit. If none of that works then you'll have to buy a ground loop isolator and hope that works.

and if neither of those help get a ground loop isololater and it will be gone.

Ill re-check my ground for the amp, its on the hump behind the spare tire. and it was sanded shiney and wiped clean before i used a gold plated ring connecter and screw.

I hear the white noise when the car is off so it may just be a shit ground. This problem did not occur when i was using the ground at the back of the car with a different amp..

I havnt yet dissconnected the wires at the wire harness for the stock speakerwires. i wonder if one of the ends is touching metal and causing the noise.

Ill let you know how it goes.

I lied actually. The ground was done with a spade terminal. it had very good contact to very shiney metal.

i unplugged the RCA's and found the hiss was still there when I cranked the gain.

will try another ground location and see what I get.

This was the JBL 75.4II amp that im using. anyone had a similar experiance? The hiss is quiet enough that I only notice it when the music is not playing.
Sounds great when I play music thru it.

perhaps it's supposed to have a slight hiss to it? ive never replaced all the factory speakers and used a 4 channel amp before. I suppose i could try the rear speakers on my cheap infinity 2 channel and see if it hisses from the same ground point as well.

just gotta wait for the friggin rain to quit so i can tinker.

well I purchased a 0/1 kit from knukonceptz and some proper distribution blocks since im going to need to power 2 amps anyways. Im hoping the better cable and ground will help me with my little problem. Either way, a 0/1 to the block followed by 4 guage to the caps/amps should be the way to go anyways.

Another question, never having used a cap before, should I wire bat-> caps (2x) -> block -> amps or bat-> block and each amp with it's own cap?

The caps are both 1 farad.

Ditch the caps, they just weaken the overall performance of the electrical system in the car. You are better off just running the power wire to the distro block then from there split to the two amps with nothing in the way.

I picked em up for practically nothing so I figure ill give em a try. If they suck ill have no issues turfin em. I plan on doing the big 3 with my spare 4guage too at some point this summer. I could sell em locally for twice what I paid for them.

Don't use 4ga for upgraded grounds if you are using 0/1. If you are using 0/1ga then you must use 0/1ga for your grounds.

The Power wire is the least important part of the electrical system. The ground is the most important. If you have a bad ground then it is usless how big your power wire is.

my audio grounds will all end up being 0 guage.

0 guage-> dist block-> 4guage > caps -> amps -> ground block-> 0 guage -> ground.

If I have spare 4 guage after my install i may end up doing the big 3 with it. just see how it goes i guess.

Yes i understand that but 0ga grounds are useless unless you upgrade your big 3 to 0ga. All you will be doing is putting more strain on your electrical system.

touche, i guess the big 3 mod might as well be with 0 guage then.

I dont really see how i could strain my electrical system with 0 guage. But im no electrical engineer. Seems to me the best im going to get for my audio would depend on the state of my negitive battery cable going to the body (and the resistance of the steel frame itself).

Like many people suggest, im going with the biggest wire i can afford. Will do the rest later.
